Job Purpose:
To undertake research as part of the Centre for Population Change (CPC) funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities (6-10 bullet points maximum)
  • To carry out literature searches and prepare literature reviews
  • To assist in the ethics application and the design and implementation of the fieldwork.
  • To carry out individual interviews in 6 case study locations (3 in the UK and 3 in Poland).
  • To assist in the preparation, coding and analysis of fieldwork data.
  • To anonymize and archive the fieldwork data in the ESRC data store.
  • To assist in the writing of reports, journal articles and policy briefings.
  • To assist in the writing and delivery of presentations for conferences and workshops involving the academic, policy and user community.
  • To work collaboratively with other members of the Centre including contributing to internal research meetings and seminars and working with the CPC Knowledge Exchange team.

Internal & External Relationships: (nature & purpose of relationships)
Internal: The post-holder will work under the day to day direction of McGhee and the overall direction of the Centre Director (Prof Jane Falkingham). As a member of CPC they will also liaise closely with other researchers within the Centre, including those in Scotland as necessary. The post holder will be expected, whenever possible, to contribute to the activities ofthe Centre, including seminar attendance, organisation of seminars, and attendance at team meetings..
External: The post-holder will need to make contact with and interview participants of the research. They will also need to engage with other academics and potential users of the research to disseminate findings.
Special Requirements:
50% of the fieldwork will take place in 3 research locations in Poland and 50% of the fieldwork will take place in 3 research locations in the UK away from Southampton. Fieldwork may take place outside usual office hours to fit with the working practices of the migrant workers being studied. It is therefore essential that the post holder is able to spend periods of time away from home and outside the UK. It is also essential that the post holder speaks both English and Polish to a high standard.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
PhD in a relevant Social Science discipline.
Experience of conducting literature searches and reviews.
Experience of interview-based qualitative fieldwork with migrant groups.
Experience of conducting interview-based fieldwork in the UK and Poland.
Experience of computer assisted qualitative data analysis software (eg. NVivo, ATLAS-ti).
Specific language skills: fluency in English and Polish.
Other language skills: fluency in other Eastern and Central European languages (for example, Czechoslovakian, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Slovakian and Slovenian).
Research interests in European migration patterns; &/or migration and family and household formation; &/ormigration and inter-generational transfers. / X
