The Great Mr. Green Supreme Court Challenge

We have gone through the Bill of right and it is now time to show that you can properly defend yourself and others in cases involving people’s rights. You will be given a case and a goal. It is your job as a group of lawyers to research the case and see what kind of defense you could give to your client or if you can uphold the state’s decision. There will also be a panel of FOUR judges and Mr. Green as the Chief Justice.

Objective: To argue your court case in front of the supreme court in order to interpret the constitution. You will be given a case, you have to research the case, put together your evidence, and argue on behalf of your side. You will be graded on your preparedness, your argument, and how well you display the knowledge of the constitution in pleading your case.

Step 1: You will be assigned to a group and your group will be given a case to either defend or prosecute. After being given the case you need to assign roles to research, prepare the evidence, and to represent the case to the judges.

Step 2: While preparing the case you will need to put together a presentation for the class to see what amendments were being argued and how they applied to the case. While the presentation is being prepared you also need to put together your court which will be argued.

Step 3: When all research is done and your defense has been prepared, you will have the opportunity to argue the case. The judges will have also research the cases and will know information that may force you to do additional research.

Step 4: The supreme court will give its decision and their decision will not impact your grade, as you will be graded on how well you prepared for, and presented, your case.

Step 5: The 4 justices must decide which way they will rule. They do not have to agree, but must provide their reasoning in why they decided the way they did. The explanation must contain facts and cannot be based on anything but the case that was presented by both sides.

Guidelines: Each side will have a chance to state their view. They will also have a chance to call witnesses to their case. Mr. Green will play the role of any witness (subject to change) and will be impartial and only play the role he is assigned. There will be no comments from the others in class and both sides must be respectful of each other. Teams can lose points for not following proper courtroom etiquette. Both sides can do outside research and present their case in any matter they deem necessary, but remember….judges could be swayed either way based on the professionalism of the presentation. These cases are based on true cases but have been modified to add more levels to the argument.

Points: This project will be worth 70 points. 35 Points will be for the preparation and presentation and 35 points will be for how well the case was presented.
