Overview of STU Undergraduate Program in English

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatureat ShantouUniversity offers courses in subjects related to linguistics, literature, translationand culture. The curriculum is designed to introduce the students to the imaginative and practical uses of the English language. English will be taught and studied as essentially an academic discipline instead of a language tool alone.The English majors will work to:

develop perspectives on human nature and cultural values through training in linguistics, literature, translation and culture;

learn how to gather, analyze, assess, synthesize and articulate information / issues orally and in writing;

gain mastery over the English language in both oral and written form;

cultivate a strong awareness of issues in world culture and issues of cultural trends in globalization;

complete a liberal education with an emphasis on the development of their analytic, critical, communicative, writing and translation skills.

The program offers three areas of concentration:linguistics,literature and translationin their cultural contexts. All the courses are designed to achieve the aforementioned objectives.With a vigorous training on critical thinking, analysis and communication, the English majors are expected to secure jobs and begin careers in such fields as newspaper, publishing, business, government and teaching. They will also have a solid foundation for graduate studies in English and other disciplines.

The Graduation Requirements:

  1. Completion of all the general requirements by the University outside of the students’ major. (49credits)
  2. Completion of a minimum of 77 credits from the required and optional required courses in the lower and upper division curricula offered by the department
  3. Fulfillment of second foreign language requirements (6 credits)
  4. Graduation thesis and internship (8 credits)
  5. A minimum of 140credits is required for graduation.
  6. Students need to pass Level Five (3) in college English to graduate.

Major Requirements

Lower Division minimum credit requirements: 37 credits from the department.

Upper Division minimum credit requirements: 40 credits from the department.

Second foreign language courses are open to the campus. The English majors can choose to take them any semester before graduation.

All the optional required courses are open to non-English majors at ShantouUniversity who are officially enrolled as long as they attain the minimum level of English proficiency required for the courses. For upper division courses, students must have passed Level 3 in college English.

Course designations usually reflect the level of difficulty.
