Module 1: "Professional responsibilities of nurses
of therapeutic department"
for third year english-speaking students of medical faculty
in the spring semester of 20__- 20__ academic year
1. / Topic 1. Ethical and legal framework of nursing in Ukraine. Organization of the work and responsibilities of a nurse of therapeutic department.
Features of nurse work with incurable patients of all ages and their relatives, the message of bad news. Organization of comprehensive care for lying patients - privacy, dignity and physical needs. Bed comfort as part of health-protective regime.
Ethical foundations of nursing. Code of Ethics of Nurse in Ukraine. Code of the International Council of Nurses. Florence Nightingale Oath. Moral and legal responsibility of a nurse. Rights of a nurse. Documents that regulate activity of a nurse in therapeutic department in Ukraine. Structure and function of therapeutic department. Main divisions of therapeutic department: emergency department, diagnostic department, clinical lab. Responsibilities of a nurse in major divisions of therapeutic department. List of documentation is a nurse in various departments of therapeutic department. Basic rules for the storage of drugs and equipment. The responsibilities of a nurse in supporting of hygiene regimes of therapeutic department. / 4
2. / Theme 2. Responsibilities of a nurse of a room of manipulations. Prescribing, recording and storage strong drugs and the means in accordance with applicable law. Calculation of doses of painkillers drugs.
Registration of patients admitting to the department. Thermometry, measurement of blood pressure, pulse assessing and themerature curve. Processing of doctors prescription. Administering of tablets and soluble drugs. Organization of the procedure room. Documentation of procedure room. Storing and keeping of drugs and medical instruments in the procedure room. Prescribing, recording and storage of narcotic and poisonous substances in accordance with applicable orders.
Methods and techniques of common blood test, blood test for sugar, the biochemical and bacteriological tests. The technique of subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous injections. Calculation of dose of soluble antibiotic. Using systems for transfusion and intravenous infusions. Basic requirements for disinfection, cleaning instruments before sterilization. Methods of control of instruments before sterilization (for blood and detergents presence). Sterilization of instruments. / 4
3. / Theme 3. The responsibilities of a nurse to provide diagnostic process in therapeutic department. Transportation, change in body position seriously ill or incurable patient.
Basic rules for the preparation of the patient for gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ultrasound of the abdomen. The main types of enemas and rules for their application.
Preparing patients and the necessary equipment for taking fecal tests, rules for taking a urine tests, test after Nechyporenko, Addis Kakovsky, their diagnostic value. Preparation and performing of gastric and duodenal sounding. Gastric lavage. Preparation of catheters to manipulation.
Methods and techniques recordering of electrocardiogram. The simplest analysis of its elements. / 4
4. / Theme 4. Specificity of procedural room and functions of a nurse for its activity. Features of application of physioprocedures for elderly and senile patients.
Organization of the sisters Procedural rooms. Terms of storing medical instruments in the Procedural room. The main types of packs. Rules imposing warming, cold, treatment packs. Technology of assessing of cupping, mustard plasters, using hot-water and ice as a treatment agents. Disinfection of equipments for reuse. The use of medicinal leeches, their storage. Terms of handheld and stationary inhalers. Methods and techniques of moistened oxygen supply and oxygen pillow using. Carrying out the physiotherapy (hydrotherapy, light, electromagnetic). The first aid in case of deterioration of the patient during physiotherapy (for practical skills department selected list of procedures for the review). / 4
5. / Theme 5. Diets. Organization of clinical nutrition of patients in the hospital. Characteristics of the diets. Artificial nutrition.
Personal hygiene of the patient. Change of bedclothes and underwear. Care and prevention of bedsores.
Douching. Oral Care. Care of the eyes, ears, nose, and hair.
Lymphostasis. Practical advice and treatment. Skin care. Impaired excretion function. Patients with a stoma. / 4
6. / Theme 6. Responsibilities of the nurse in the intensive care unit. Features of the assistance for incurable patients with impaired respiratory function and digestion. The control of symptoms.
Caring for seriously ill and persons in agony. Principles of Basic Life Support. Biological death.
