MATH 2

Mrs. Lathrop

2016 - 2017

Welcome to Mrs. Lathrop’s Math 2 class. Math 2 combines elements of Geometry with Algebra and Probability. It covers everything from quadratics, functions, circles, trigonometry and more. It is designed to covers these topics using task based learning. You will be exploring real-life tasks and learning the California Common Core Standards through this exploration. Your class participation will be necessary for the exploration to be meaningful, so be prepared to participate. I will do my best to make you feel comfortable in doing so.

SUPPLIES

The following materials need to be brought to class daily:

§  Composition book-graph lined

§  Mechanical pencil with extra lead and erasers

§  Highlighter

§  Colored pencils (at least 4 colors)

§  Glue stick

§  A scientific calculator is recommended.

You will be using your composition book every day, right from the start, so please try to get this and some mechanical pencils immediately!

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

ALL SCHOOL RULES WILL BE ENFORCED

The expectation for appropriate classroom behavior is based upon RESPECT. I expect you to treat your fellow students and me with respect, and I will do the same for you. We will practice what this means during discussions so everyone will feel comfortable participating in class. If, at any time, you are made to feel uncomfortable, please let me know, you can talk to me or drop me a note.

If a minor offence occurs, a verbal correction will be made. Next, a detention will be issued with a phone call home. Major offenses will result in immediate removal from the classroom, a phone call home and a referral will be issued.

If you are caught with your cell phone or headphones/earbuds out, without prior permission, you will be asked to give it to me. I will put it in my file cabinet drawer and lock it in so it will be safe. I will return it to you at the end of class.

Food & Drink - you may bring bottled water into the classroom, no other food or drink is allowed. There has been a continual problem with ants in the classroom.

Bathroom Passes – each student will be given four bathroom passes for each semester. Please go to the bathroom, your locker, see your counselor… before school, after school, at lunch or during the passing periods. Any passes you have left at the end of the semester will be worth 5 homework points each.

Academic Honesty – it is expected that ALL work turned in with your name on it is your work alone. Academic dishonesty includes copying homework, giving or receiving help on a test or quiz, and passing off the work of others as your own. Any assignment you are caught being dishonest on will result in a zero on that assignment with no possibility of making the assignment up. If it is a test you will put yourself in danger of failing the course.

Attendance – good attendance is essential to keeping up with the material. It will be difficult to explore the tasks without the help of your group or the teacher’s guidance. Please do your best to come every day.

This includes tardies; excessive tardies have caused many student’s grade to go down by one letter grade because of missed assignments, missed content and missed review.

HOMEWORK

·  Homework will be assigned daily. It will be due the next time class meets. Most of it will be in the form of a Ready, Set, Go worksheet set.

·  All homework must be done in pencil. You may use colored pencil to add clarity to your work, no colored markers as they tend to bleed through the paper.

·  All work must be included in a clear and detailed fashion. Work vertically on the page and circle your answer.

CLASS WORK

·  Warm-ups will be done at the beginning of each class and will be review problems and/or problems that lead into the day’s lesson. A

·  They will also include “Number Talks” type problems that will help to improve your basic math skills.

·  Tasks will also be done in your composition book and all work must be included in a clear and detailed fashion. Notes will be included as you do the task. At the end of each day we will go over what was learned that day and highlight these concepts in your composition book so they will be easy to find.

·  All work in your composition book must be done in pencil, but you may use colored pencil to add clarity to your work and notes, no colored markers as they tend to bleed through the paper.

Please note: Work done in pen will have to be rewritten.

TESTS/QUIZZES

Tests will be given at the end of each module, they are always announced. They will all be cumulative. There will also be a district final at the end of each semester.

Quizzes will be given two or three times a module. They may not be announced. You may use your composition book to help you on the quizzes but not on tests. Quizzes may be retaken at tutoring before the module test.

Test Retakes: Test retakes will be allowed under specific circumstances. Please see the Test Retake Request Form.

ABSENT WORK

·  Make-up Work needs to be turned in the class after the one you missed.

·  Missed Warm-ups – Get the warm-up problems from your shoulder partner, you may ask your shoulder partner questions but you need to do all the work.

·  Missed Tasks – Start by talking to your shoulder partner about the task you missed, if there are any hand-outs for it, please get them from me during the warm-up. Jot down any questions about the task you have that your partner cannot answer and see me at the end of class so we can figure out how to get you r questions answered and the help you need.

·  Missed Quizzes – Talk to me about when it would be best to make-up the missed quiz.

·  Test Make-ups: if you were absent and missed a test, you will need to make an appointment to take a make-up test – it is your responsibility. Tests must be made-up within one week of an absence.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is a pleasure to have your student in my Integrated Math 2 course this school year. Integrated Math 2 includes material from Geometry, Algebra, and Probability. I am very excited to be using the Mathematics Vision Project (MVP) materials for Integrated Math 2 this year. These materials provide real-life task based lessons and you can see the tasks we will be using on their web page at mvp.org.

Homework will be given daily, the “Ready, Set, Go” material on the web page. Please check with your student to make sure that homework is getting done.

Since most of the lessons are task based attendance will be very important, please try to arrange doctor appointments and vacations keeping this in mind. Any help you can give to get your student to class and there on time is greatly appreciated. Together we can help your student have a tremendous year! Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.

If, at some point, you find your student is struggling, please let me know. A quick email or a note through your student will help me to know what is going on and we can all work together to get your student back on track. Please note my tutoring times listed above and I look forward to working with you as a team to help your student succeed.

You can contact me best via e-mail at . If you need to call me the number is (951) 738-2100 extension 1310. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.
