Section-A

I. Comprehension

The fish hawk, or osprey, is not as large as the eagle, but he has a hooked bill and sharp claws like the eagle.

His is a dark brown in color with black and white spots, and he is from twenty to twenty-two inches long. His breast is mostly white. His tail and wings are long.

The fish hawk is often found sitting upon a tree over a pond, lake, or river. He is also found by the seaside.

He watches the fish as they swim in the water beneath him, and then he darts down suddenly and catches one of them.

When he catches a fish in his sharp, rough claws, he carries it off to eat, and, as he flies away with it for his dinner, an eagle sometimes meets him.

The eagle flies at him fiercely with his sharp bill and claws and compels the hawk to drop the fish.

Then the eagle catches the fish as it falls and carries it off.

The poor fish hawk, with a loud cry, timidly flies away. He must go again to the water and catch another fish for his dinner.

So you see that the eagle is a robber. He robs fish hawks, whose only mode of getting a living is by catching fish.

Questions:

1. Where do fish hawks live?

2. Why does the fish hawk let the eagle take its fish?

3. How are fish hawks and eagles alike?

4. Why do you think fish hawks live where they do?

II.Write a summary on what is considered good telephone etiquette

Ladies and gentlemen,

Let me first congratulate you and welcome you to the company. We are indeed happy to have you here with us. JJ Sdn Bhd has been around for many years and we pride ourselves in excellent customer service. So, as Head of Customer Service, let me give you a few pointers on what we must and mustn't do when dealing with our customers, especially over the telephone.

When the telephone rings, we must by all means try and pick it up by the third ring. Do not allow the phone to ring for too long or customers would think we are too busy or not interested in them. As soon as you pick it up, inform the caller who you are and mention the company's name. Ask for the caller's name and his or her intentions for calling. Please note down this information. We are after all human and we tend to forget things, so it's pertinent to take down the information or message on a piece of paper. If, however, you are unable to take a call and you are required to call back, then return the call promptly. Do not wait for days. In fact, you should return calls within 24 hours. Most importantly, be polite when talking on the phone. Even if the caller is demanding or rude, you must keep your cool at all times.

I think telephone etiquette is nothing new. Of course we are required to practice this in the office, but I think it also applies in our private phone calls.

With this, ladies and gentlemen, I thank you for your time and look forward to working with you in the company.

The Cunning Fox and the Clever Stork

Once upon a time, there lived a very cunning and mischievous fox. He used to speak to other animals sweetly and gain their trust, before playing tricks on them.

One day the fox met a stork. He befriended the stork and acted like a very good friend. Soon, he invited the stork to have a feast with him. The stork happily accepted the invitation.

The day of the feast came, and the stork went to the fox’s house. To her surprise and disappointment, the fox said that he could not make a big feast as promised, and just offered some soup. When he brought the soup out of the kitchen, the stork saw that it was in a shallow bowl!

The poor stork could not have any soup with its long bill, but the fox easily licked the soup from the plate. As the stork just touched the soup with the tip of its bill, the fox asked her, “How is the soup? Don’t you like it?”

The hungry stork replied, “Oh it is good, but my stomach is upset, and I can’t take any more soup!”

“I’m sorry for troubling you,” said the fox.

The stork replied, “Oh dear, please don’t say sorry. I have some health problem and cannot enjoy what you offer.”

She left the place after thanking the fox, and inviting him to her house for dinner.

The day arrived and the fox reached the stork’s place. After exchanging pleasantries, the stork served soup for both of them, in a narrow jar with a long neck. She was able to have the soup very easily with her long bill, but the fox obviously could not.

After finishing hers, the stork asked the fox if he was enjoying the soup. The fox remembered the feast he himself had given the stork, and felt very ashamed. He stammered, “I…I’d better leave now. I have a tummy ache.”

Humiliated, he left the place running.
