2. Space Design
Cut a large shape from a sheet of black paper. Cut this shape into 9 or more pieces. Using a sheet of white paper as your background, reform the cut up pieces of black paper back into their original shape. Expand the shape by gradually sliding the pieces apart. Experiment with different amounts of negative space between the pieces. After deciding on the most pleasing arrangement of space, glue the pieces on the white paper.

3. Design A Space Assignment
  • Off of a master bedroom is a 10x12 sitting room with 1 window. How will you open up and use this space?
  • Draw a 10x12 space on graph paper and select a place for the 1 window.
  • Use the furniture stencils to experiment with different placements and combinations of furnishings. Draw other furnishings not seen. Once completed, glue them down.
  • What colors and textures will you use on the wall, floor, and furnishings?
  • Cut out and mount the room design.
  • Give it a title

10. Texture RubbingFold a sheet of paper into six squares.
- Put your name and hour in the first square
-Make 5 texture rubbings by placing your paper over a surface and rubbing it with a crayon.
Label each texture rubbing with its object AND adjectives describing the texture.
11. Pattern Design On the back of your texture rubbing paper follow the instructions to create the 6 different designs and identify each of their type of pattern.
12. Color and design the 3 sofas each with a different pattern and texture. Identify how doing this changes the appearance of the sofa.
13. Texture BoardUsing your favorite room picture, identify how you think this room could be different by varying the textures. If the room is formal, how could you make it informal by changing its texture and if its informal, how could yo make it formal? Choose 3 objects or coverings in the room (upholstery/fabric, window coverings, wall treatments, accessories, flooring…) and find actual samples of what you could use inst of what is in the picture. Remember to use variety in your textures.
Fold a piece of cardstock in half and properly mount your samples to the left side of the page. On the right side of the page explain what the actual object is and how you chose to modify it. Also explain how this changed the appearance and feel of the object area or room..

1. I was excited to move into a large apartment with high ceilings and a huge living are, but it does not feel like home yet. With the wood floors and smooth plaster walls, sound almost seems to echo in here. I have living room furniture and a dining table and chairs, but it just doesn’t take up much room.
