The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year is promoting the European Union in around 20 ports across the 27Member States by sponsoring the sailing vessel Traité de Rome as part of the Sail for Europe project.

Traité de Rome will arrive on Wednesday 4 September in Thessaloniki (Greece) and dock in front of the city landmark Lefkos Pyrgos (White Tower) at 10.30 a.m. The sailing boat with the European flag will be welcomed by the President of the EESC, Dimitris Dimitriadis, and the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Vassilios Papageorgopoulos.

The EESC in partnership with the Region of Macedonia and the European Information Centre of Central Macedonia will welcome visitors on board during the two days in port, invite them to participate to a special quiz, inform them about the European Union and organise a drawing competition with children from SOS Children’s Village.

The aim of the event is to bring the public closer to the European project by going out and meeting it in this yacht and communicating on European values such as the spirit of the European team, the entrepreneurial mindset as well as the need to respect our environment.

As a follow-up to this event, the EESC will participate on 5 and 6 September in the International Trade Fair of Thessaloniki in order to promote a permanent dialogue with stakeholders at a European level.

The celebrations of the 50th Anniversary will culminate with the EESC Biennial Conference on the topic “Entrepreneurship with a Human Face “ that will be taking place in Athens on 8 and 9 September 2008.
