The School of Engineering
The School of Engineering comprises the Departments of Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The role of the School is to organise the academic activities of the two Departments, support interdepartmental and interdisciplinary programmes as well as administering the strategic development of the two departments.
The Department of Electronic Engineering
The Dept of Electronic Engineering at The Institute of Technology Tallaght has specialist staff across the spectrum of modern Electronic Engineering disciplines, ranging from traditional areas such as Electrical systems, Analogue and Digital Electronics, to more specific areas such as Telecommunications, Computer Networks, Digital Signal Processing, Computer Aided Design, IC Design, Microelectronic Device Fabrication, Microprocessor Systems Design and Computer Programming. The Electronics Engineering department boasts a large number of very well equipped hardware and computer based laboratories as well as a specialist Microelectronics Fabrication Laboratory. IT Tallaght graduates in Electronic Engineering are in demand and are finding challenging and interesting employment in high technology industry which is rich in variety and opportunities for future career growth and advancement. Undergraduate Programmesare currently offered in the fields of Electronic Engineering and Energy Engineering. Members of the Department are also actively involved in a number of research areas. The Department of Electronic Engineering currently delivers a B.Eng(Hons) in Electronic Engineering as a joint Programme with Nanjing Tech University in Nanjing, China.
Assistant Lecturer in Electronic Engineering – Contract Post
Arising from a staff member going on career break the Institute seeks to appoint a person to backfill for them and todeliver lectures in a variety of modules to students . An in-depth knowledge of the following areas would be preferable:
- Electronic and Electrical Control Systems
- Renewable Energy System Design and Management
- Renewable Energy Economics
- Computer Programming
Candidates will be expected to be self-starters, able to operate independently. In addition, they should have excellent interpersonal skills including patience and diplomacy.
Assistant Lecturer in Electronic Engineering - Qualification & Experience Requirements
The minimum qualification for an Assistant Lecturer post is a primary Honours degree in Electronic Engineering (NQAI Level 8) or an equivalent qualification, together with at least 3 years relevant post graduate experience. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a proven record of industrial or research experience and ideally a strong commitment to teaching.
A relevant postgraduate qualification or professional qualification and or relevant lecturing experience would be desirable. Successful candidates will be required to have a Garda Background Clearance Check.

1Salary Scale (10 points)
Assistant Lecturer (New Entrant):€36,743 to €50,487 pa
Starting salary will be at the minimum point of the relevant scale only. Candidates should note that the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in accordance with Government pay policy.
Minimum Qualifications for Post

2Duties
The appointee will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration The appointee shall carry out such duties as are assigned to him/her in accordance with collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the Minister for Education and Science, including but not limited to:
- Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by the management of the Institute, day or evening, up to 630 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students where appropriate. There will be a norm of 18 class contact hours per week, which may be varied by Institute management from 16 to 20 following consultation with the Assistant Lecturer. A weighting of 1.5 will apply to hours worked after 6.00 p.m.
(These arrangements are subject to collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the Minister for Education and Science).
- Carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examinations
work, and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities.
- Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course
development.
- Engaging in research, consultancy and development work as
appropriate.
- Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings
convened by management.
- Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as
required by management.
- Engaging in promotion including student recruitment as appropriate.
h.Participating in the development, implementation and maintenance of
academic quality assurance arrangements.
- Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of
their department/school and of the Institute.
- Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking
academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work. When
an Assistant Lecturer is supervising a Tutor/Demonstrator a reduction in teaching hours will be applied on the basis of a one hour reduction per three hours demonstration/tutorials supervised.
3Progression
Assistant Lecturers will progress to the Grade of Lecturer on completion of one year’s service after having reached the maximum of the Assistant Lecturer scale subject to a minimum of five years continuous service in the grade subject to ability, experience, academic qualifications, scholarship and demonstrated performance. Possession of an appropriate defined postgraduate qualification or equivalent shall normally be considered an essential requirement.
Pensions
The appointee will become a member of the appropriate public service pension scheme. Broadly, if the appointee:
(a) served in a public service body as a pensionable public servant on 31 December 2012, then the terms of the Education Sector Superannuation Scheme shall apply to the appointee; or
(b) first serves in a public service body as a pensionable public servant on or after 1 January 2013 or has not, prior to appointment, served in a public service body as a pensionable public servant, then the provisions of the Public Service Pensions Single Scheme will apply.
As the rules relating to membership of these schemes contain a number of exceptions, if the appointee has any queries as to which pension scheme provisions apply to them, these should be raised as soon as practicable after appointment with the HR Manager. The appointee shall be obliged to make pension contributions in accordance with the rules of the applicable scheme and the appointee shall be subject to the applicable scheme’s provisions as amended from time to time.
