Salary: £23,628-£24,658 pro rata, per annum

Context:
London Gypsy and Traveller Unit (LGTU) is a well established charity working with London’s Gypsy and Traveller community since 1981. The organisation grew out of work managed by Save the Children until LGTU became independent in 1998. The board of trustees includes Travellers, supporters and interested professionals. The project has changed and developed over the years, responding to changing needs.
Our Purpose
We support Gypsies and Travellers living in London: to influence decisions affecting their lives; to improve their quality of life and the opportunities available to them and to challenge the discrimination they routinely experience. In partnership with the community, LGTU uses its experience and expertise to contribute to the development of local, regional and national policy. Our work over the past 30 years has been possible because London Gypsies and Travellers trust LGTU to listen to their concerns and respond appropriately for the long term.
Job Purpose:
To work as part of a team to deliver a programme of group work to young Travellers in Hackney and or Haringey. The role will entail taking a lead inproviding a planned programme of activities that will give young people an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of enjoyable, stimulating and challenging experiences in the form of sports, creative arts, citizenship & outdoor education, etc.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Tasks & Responsibilities:
  1. To work as part of a team acting as a leader and/or participant as required.
  2. To plan, implement and evaluate the youth work programme to includepersonal development, citizenship and life skills.
  3. To work directly with young people 8-19 years to enable their personal development and social education by delivering a range of positive activities.
  4. To provide outreach and support to individual young Travellers.
  5. To make relationships and develop trust with the young people.
  6. Take charge of the risk assessment process for group work activities, including ensuring compliance of premises with health and safety guidance.
  7. Produce outcome-focused reports, demonstrating the impacts and benefits toyoung people.
  8. Input into yearly Operational Plan, contribute to fundraising initiative.
  9. Contribute to website to promote LGTU’s Public Profile.
  10. To take responsibility for the materials, equipment and vehicles used in this work.
  11. To attend Youth work team meetings, staff meetings and to participate in LGTU events and duties when needed.
  12. To fulfil central office procedures and admin tasks arising from the work.
  13. To ensure work is developed within the bounds of professional good practice.
  14. Liaise effectively with a range of people across the local community, includingstatutory, voluntary sectors.
  15. To take reasonable care of your own health and safety and other who may be affected by your work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Demonstrable knowledge and skills in youth work and group work.
  2. Desirable to have a professional youth work qualification.
  3. Experience of countering discrimination and working with hard to reach young people.
  4. Ability to be part of, and contribute to, the project team in terms of planning, implementation and evaluation of programs of work; and to the broad aims and objectives.
  5. Good communication skills, both written and oral, with a wide range of people.
  6. Good basic IT and administrative skills and the ability to write reports and keep accessible records
  7. Ability to drive a minibus and be in possession of a clean driving licence.
  8. To have three years driving experience.
  9. Commitment to work within an Equalities & Diversity Framework.
