The Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Cape Town has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching in all major fields of civil engineering, including structural engineering, construction materials, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, water quality engineering, transport studies and urban engineering.

Applications are invited for this full-time academic post in Urban Engineering. It is expected that the incumbent will join relevant research groups in the Department and the Faculty, and actively contribute to teaching and research activities, including the supervision of research students.

The Urban Engineering Group is responsible for teaching courses mainly in urban infrastructure design and management within the undergraduate curriculum, and running the very successful postgraduate programme in Urban Infrastructure Design & Management (in conjunction with the African Centre for Cities), leading to the MPhil qualification. Applicants with relevant qualifications and academic experience in the broad areas of municipal engineering, urban infrastructure design and infrastructure management will be considered. An ability to run the design project for final-year undergraduate students, or to teach highway engineering, will be advantageous.

Requirements:

A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, or the equivalent in a related field, is required. A PhD and relevant teaching experience will be advantageous. Applicants with a postgraduate qualification and relevant professional experience will also be considered. Appointment at Professor/Associate Professor level will normally require a good record of research publications, but relevant professional experience may be considered.
