This Week:

During February, we celebrate Black History Month, a month to honor the contributions of African Americans to United States history. Today’s Black History Month contemporary comes to us by way of the Foreign Language Department.

Zoe Saldana-Perego, an American actress and dancer, was bornZoe Yadira Saldaña Nazario June 19, 1978 in Passaic, NJ. She spent the majority of her early childhood growing up in Jackson Heights,Queens, New York, and her native languages are both English andSpanish.Following rave performances with the FACES theater group in New York City as a teenager, Saldana made her screen debut in an episode ofLaw& Order(1999). Her film career began a year later withCenter Stage, followed by a role inCrossroads. She first gained some prominence for her role as AnamariainPirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Saldana's breakthrough came in 2009 with the roles ofNyota UhurainStar Trekand Neytiri inJames Cameron'sAvatar. The latter film received widespread acclaim, and is the highest-grossing film of all time. Saldana continued her successful career with films such asColombiana,Star Trek Into Darkness, andGuardians of the Galaxy.

The make-up date for the Softball and Baseball Impact test will be Thursday February 25th at 3 pm in the library. - KK

Humanities Resource Club is sponsoring a book drive collecting gently used children's books in history classes. The books will be donated to NJ schools in need. - EM

The National Art Honor Society is doing an art supply drive for SAFE in Hunterdon organization. SAFE in Hunterdon provides support services for families (adults, teens, and children) who have experienced domestic and/or sexual violence in their lives. The art supplies that we collect from this drive will go to their art therapy program. We are asking for new and slightly used art supplies as donations. Some examples of donations are, drawing books, marker sets, crayon boxes, rulers, glue, and paint. A box will be labeled and located in all of the art rooms. - RC
