The Council of Churches of Greater Washington,under the direction and guidance of our President, The Rev. James Terrell, believes that now is the right timefor the houses of worship of Washington to share with the American publicand the US Congress the deep frustration of the residents of the District of Columbia with the flawed and undemocratic nature of ourunequal status. We wish tospur public awareness that our current situation is unacceptable and needs to be permanently and constitutionally rectified. We believe that in order to do so,the only completeand appropriate remedy is statehood. Why statehood? Because that is the means provided by the Constitution to ensure equal treatment of all citizens of the United States, and because any lesser measure can be rescinded by Congress at any time Congress chooses to do so and for any reason, without regard to the wishes of our residents.No such burden is laid upon citizens living in the states making up our union.NOTHING LESS THAN STATEHOOD IS ACCEPTABLE, and justice demands it.
We recall to public attention the grand words of our Declaration of Independence -
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
