Conceptual Art and Media Installation

Course Outline:

Objective:

It aims to give the students an introduction of some theories behind the contemporary art, cultural study, philosophy of aesthetic. It would be best followed by a series of medium based workshop in the second stage, to equip students with basic knowledge on photography, digital video and video editing, creative writing and installation.

Target:

Recommended Target would be higher form students (F.4-7) who are interested in art and critical theory on culture.

Teaching language:

Mainly Cantonese, supplemented with English reading and lecture notes.

Class Size:

15 -20 students

1.  Duchamp and ‘his’ readymade

Duchamp, and the Urinal.

Art, and the museum.

Author and the selector.

Chess Player and the Father of Conceptual Art.

2.  Andy Warhol and commodity

Andy Warhol, the famous Director and founder of the Art Factory, also the icon on Pop Art. What else does he represent apart from the Campbell Cans? This Lecture is aimed at revealing the relationship between art and Marx’s view on Art. Should Art be independent from the business world in order to maintain its independency?

3.  Fluxus and Pop Art (The Idea of Happening) – Embrace and attack on Art as commodity

They said: "Hey! - coffee cups can be more beautiful than fancy sculptures. A kiss in the morning can be more dramatic than a drama by Mr. Fancypants. The sloshing of my foot in my wet boot sounds more beautiful than fancy organ music."

‘Fluxus’ in Latin is fluere, means fluid. This movement lighted up the fire of conceptual art and have a big influence on contemporary art. It forces us to ask a question ‘what could be art?’
