- During World War II, the Soviet army moved westward all the way to Berlin. As they did this, they freed the European countries that Germany had conquered. After WWII was over, the Soviet troops did not leave. They force the countries to be Communist. Most contact with the western part of Europe was cut off.
- The Soviets tried to expand their power beyond Eastern Europe. They encouraged rebels in other nations to turn to communism. The United States wanted to stop this. The superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, backed opposing sides in conflicts in Asia and Africa.
