The Co-op School Procedures for Referral and Therapeutic Services

  1. Caregiver meeting #1(Present: teachers, and either director/curriculum director if outside evaluation is being suggested)

Initiate a conversation with the caregiver(s), either through email or in person. Discuss the struggle(s) noticed in school, i.e. behavior problems, speech, fine motor, etc. and see how these issues are presenting at home.

If the issue is severe enough to warrant immediate attention, we can recommend outside evaluation services during the initial conversation. (see Meredith for list. Skip to 2b.)

If it is an issue that we can wait and see how it develops, agree on “Personal Planof Action,” containing up to 3 specific goals that will hopefully improve the situation and aid in strengthening any weakness. Make a plan for next meeting in 1-2 months.

  1. Caregiver meeting #2(Present: teachers, and either director/curriculum director if outside evaluation is being suggested)
  2. Continue with personal plan:

Make new plan of action with new set of specific goals and make another meeting in 1-2 months to reassess

  1. Outside Evaluation:

If there has been no improvement within the allotted time frame, we recommend outside evaluation services.

Parents have final say with evaluation, however, if a child is taking away from the environment and learning of themselves and others the school will insist or take other action.

The teachers and administration support the family and child in every way we can during the evaluation process. We make phone calls on the family’s behalf and make ourselves available for phone, or in-person interviews, regarding our student’s needs.

  1. Ongoing

Once the therapies have been set, we work with the parents, students, SEITs and therapists to support and scaffold from the services that are being provided.

If we can, we allow the student and their therapists’ space in the building to work together during the school day.

We ask for all IEPs to be handed into the administration and teachers and frequently check in on progress and next steps.
