10:00Glorious Past: Heroic Warriors in Ancient Greece and China

Paul Properzio, Boston Latin Academy

Descriptive epithets have long been found in narratives of world literature, particularly in poetic compositions reflecting the heroic ages in Greece and Near East. This paper looks at the Iliad, Homeric Hymns to Ares and Athena, and the Chinese Book of Songs, 11 to see what the heroic epithets reveal about early Greek and Far Eastern literary traditions.

Modern observation of traditional weavers in India and central Asia aid in understanding how chanting and singing may have both accompanied and assisted in the practice of weaving in the ancient world.
