Earth Science Concentration

The changes to this program reflect

  • the reduction of course credits to meet program credit requirements (programs are not todrop below 122 or exceed 126 s.h.),
  • curriculum design that is in compliance with Seamless Transfer,
  • curriculum design that is in compliance with the SUNY 7/10/30 General Education Requirement, and
  • coursework that infuses the Critical Thinking (Reasoning) and Information Management competencies in the General Education program.

The structure of the following proposal includes

  • A listing of non-course admissions requirements,
  • A brief summary of the proposed changes,
  • Section 2.1 Changes in Program Content (from SUNY Program Revision Proposal: Changes to an Existing Program--EPP Form 3A)—a side-by-side comparison of changes with justifications,
  • SUNY Undergraduate Sample Program Schedule (part of Section 3 of EPP Form 3A)—a four-year sample layout of the program to demonstrate how transfer students could potentially move through the program, and
  • SUNY Transfer Pathways for the major and the concentration areas. (A separate document of Transfer Pathways for all disciplines used as General Education requirements across concentrations is provided to avoid confusion and repetition.)

In Section 2.1 below, each program is organized into four main sections:

  • Professional Education Courses—All education (EDUC) and educational psychology (EPSY) coursework required for major.
  • Required Related Work—Courses not in major that are required based on pertinent content and/or necessary prerequisites to other coursework.
  • General Education Courses—Reflect SUNY General Education Requirements
  • Concentration—Minimum of 30 s.h. in a discipline outside of EDUC and EPSY

Admission to Early Childhood/Childhood B-6 Education Programs

I. Declaration of Major

Upon acceptance to the College candidates should declare a specific education program as their major and an area of concentration. At that time they will be assigned an advisor.

II. Application for Candidate Status

Students apply for candidacy one semester prior to taking their first methods sequence. To be eligible for methods, the student must meet the following:

a.Must have completed all required coursework.

b.Must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA in their professional education core courses, a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, and 2.8 minimum average in their concentration courses.

c.No grades below "C" (2.0) in 100-level coursework.

d. Must have completed 92 semester hours by the end of the semester of application.

e. Must have removed all incomplete and pending grades in required courses.

f. Must have passed the College Writing Examination.

g. Must have completed the Candidacy Essay.

III. Application for Student Teaching

Education candidates will follow application procedures determined by the Office of Education Advisement and Field Experience. Candidates in the semester preceding student teaching must attend the publicized Application Meeting. Subsequently, a student teaching assignment will be given provided eligibility requirements have been met.

a.Students must be a candidate in one of the teacher education programs.

b.Candidates must successfully complete all student teaching prerequisites designated by their program.

c.Candidates must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA, a minimum 2.8 GPA in their concentration courses, and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the professional education core courses and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the methods sequence.

d.Candidates must achieve a "C" or better in each methods course to progress to their next semester (next methods or student teaching). If a student needs to repeat the methods block, a minimum 3.0 cum GPA in each methods block must be demonstrated.

e.Application completed.

f.Approval by the Office of Education Advisement and Field Experience and the department chair.

IV. Student Teaching Placements

Student teaching placements are made by the Office of Education Advisement and Field Experience in collaboration with the department chair and faculty.

Notes on Degree Requirements

In the methods sequence of 15 s.h., candidates are required to do extensive field work during and outside of class times. Candidates are not allowed to take additional courses.

Brief Summary of the Proposed Changes

Professional Education Courses—Five courses were eliminated. Several course changes were approved by dean to assimilate content from these courses. An assessment course was added. A total of 10 s.h. were cut as a result.

General Education Courses

This section was restructured. Recommendations were made for courses that would meet both the SUNY Gen Ed requirements and the liberal education across disciplines required by NYS Education Department. Justifications explain overlaps allowed. Semester hours in this section were reduced by 6.

Concentration Courses

These changes were reviewed and approved by the corresponding department.
