Center on Heath, Aging, and Disability
Research Pilot Grant Program Guidelines

Introduction

The Center on Health, Aging, and Disability (CHAD) is an interdisciplinary research center that supports research, education, and outreach addressing the many facets of health, wellness, and quality of life.

The Center employs an interdisciplinary approach to research that focuses on:

·  Aging across the entire lifespan

·  A broad definition of health that includes not only prevention, but enhancement of quality of life.

·  Development of affordable and usable technologies

·  Community-based research

CHAD endeavors to assist AHS faculty advance their careers by:

·  Encouraging innovative thinking and approaches to research

·  Cultivating the development of new multi-disciplinary teams

·  Providing resources and supports to help faculty secure external funding

To facilitate this work, CHAD announces a new Pilot Grant program. This program will help advance research careers by providing pilot funding, guiding grant recipients through the grant experience and helping them develop a proposal for external funding.

Awards

The CHAD Pilot Grant program will award up to four grants of $15,000 each.

Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by the CHAD Advisory Committee according to the following criteria:

·  Address a major societal health need

·  Use a multi-disciplinary team approach (within or across departments)

·  Show high quality of research design (appropriateness and feasibility of design and methods)

·  Demonstrate promise for significant impact

·  Show high likelihood for securing subsequent external funding

Eligibility

Principal investigators must be Assistant or Associate Professors in the College of Applied Health Sciences, at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Senior faculty members, research associates, graduate students, and faculty from other campus units and other institutions may serve as co-investigators.

Application Process

·  Applicants will complete a brief application form

·  Applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM on Friday, December 11, 2009

·  Applications will be reviewed by the CHAD Advisory Board

·  Awards are for a 12-month period beginning immediately after the awards are announced.

Post Award Process

Grant recipients will be provided with support through the grant period as follows:

·  Grant recipients will be invited to meet with the CHAD Advisory Committee, who will assist them in advancing their projects.

·  Grant recipients will be provided with Navigators who will facilitate their project implementation, and provide help in preparing to develop a proposal for external funding.

Grant recipients will be required to do the following:

·  Submit a report to CHAD six months after the end of the grant period that includes an accounting of expenditures and activities, and a copy of external grant submissions related to the work supported.

·  Prepare a poster presentation for inclusion in the CHAD/HWI Annual Symposium.
