THE CARDEW-RENDLE HISTORY PRIZE

6th November 2015- 31st July 2016

The Royal institution of Cornwall is pleased to announce the 2016 Cardew-Rendle history prize, funded by a generous legacy from Harold Cornelius Cardew-Rendle.

A prize of £2000 will be awarded to the winner, with two runner up prizes of £250 each. The winning essay will be considered for publication in the 2017 RIC Journal.

To enter, please submit an original essay of non-fiction between 6000-8000 words on any aspect of Cornwall’s past in any period, including pre-history. Essays will be considered on the understanding that they have not been previously published nor simultaneously submitted of publication.

Five printed copies should be sent to Ian Wall, Director of the Royal Cornwall Museum, River Street, Truro TR1 2SJ by 31th July. They must be typed on one side of A4 paper, double spaced or one and a half spaced throughout with ample margins. The front page should only reference the title of the essay and that it has been written specifically for the competition. The second page must have an abstract of no more than 250 words. All essays must use Harvard Referencing (embedded quotations and a comprehensive list of references used at the end of the essay).

Eligibility:

·  The prize is open to anyone except staff at the Royal Institution of Cornwall.

·  Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must not have previously published self-published, published on any website or broadcast.

·  Submissions should be original essays written specifically for this competition.

·  Entries submitted posthumously will not be eligible.

Receipt of Entry

·  If you require acknowledgement of your entry, please enclose a stamped addressed postcard marked ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.

·  It is not possible to confirm receipt of entries by phone or email.

·  Essays will not be returned to the author

Judging Process

·  All essays will be submitted to the judges anonymously so please do not include your name with the essay title.

·  The judges’ decision will be final, fair, independent and individual entries will not be commented upon.

·  The judges reserve the right not to make an award.

Prize Giving

·  The prize giving will take place on 19th November 2016 at the AGM of the Royal Institution of Cornwall.

·  The winner and runner up entries will be notified by the 31st October 2016
