Noon-12:50 p.m. Less Safe, Less Free: Why America is Losing the War on Terror
David Cole (1.0 CLE hour)
Professor at Georgetown University Law Center, a volunteer staff attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights, the legal affairs correspondent for The Nation, a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books, and a commentator on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. He is the author of two award-winning books, Enemy Aliens, which received the American Book Award in 2004, and No Equal Justice: Race and Class in the American Criminal Justice System, which was named Best Non-Fiction Book of 1999 by the Boston Book Review, and best book on an issue of national policy in 1999 by the American Political Science Association. His most recent book, published in September 2007, is entitled Less Safe, Less Free: Why America is Losing the War on Terror.

Stefan Lorenzmeier (1.0 CLE hour)
An assistant professor at Augsburg University Law School since 2001. He has a Master’s degree in European Law from Leiden University and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Augsburg. Dr. Lorenzmeier’s teaching experience includes lectures in the USA, Croatia, and the Russian Federation and a research project on International water law. He is the coauthor of textbooks on public international and European law and of numerous articles. His main research work concerns the law of international trade and common goods. In the spring of 2007 he was a visiting Fulbright scholar at UCM.
2:00-2:50 p.m. Impact of the “War on Terror” on Human Rights
Jumana Musa (1.0 CLE hour)
Currently the Advocacy Director for Domestic Human Rights and International Justice at Amnesty International. Here she addresses the domestic and international impact of the Bush administration’s “war on terror” on human rights. She has also served as Amnesty International’s legal observer at military commission proceedings at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Formerly, she worked as a policy attorney for the National Network to End Domestic Violence and handled international relations and immigration issues as a fellow in the office of Congressman Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. Ms. Musa holds a BA in International Relations from Brown University and a JD from Georgetown University.
