BOUNCE NOTES – By Christian Aurand

The Art of Turning Tough Times into Triumph

Potholes on the Road To Greatness

  • Bumps in the Road
  • Issues, Struggle, Tough Times
  • Poor Performance

Anatomy of a Bounce

  • 2 Questions
  • What is your greatest quality?
  • Can you think of when you last used this quality?
  • Disintegration and Reintegration = V and a Bounce
  • Recruit – Soldier – Ranger
  • Road to Greatness

Losing Altitude

  • Team and Individuals giving up
  • Never want to lose a perfectly good loss of altitude!
  • Use it to your advantage

Getting People Right

  • Getting the Right People vs Getting the People Right
  • 10% on the right people and 90% on getting people right

Run to the Sound of Gunfire

  • Ex: What would you do if someone came in this building shooting?
  • Run away or Run to and Why!
  • Take Cover you only THINK you are safe
  • To ATTACK the enemy is the only way to get your enemy to stop shooting
  • Leaders Must Absorb Anxiety to Free Team
  • Example: Saving Private Ryan
  • Gripes don’t go down the chain, they go up the chain.

Absorb Anxiety

  • Put AA on the refrigerator
  • Long time employee can’t handle, get the people right
  • I want your job types are needed…hire them….mentor and mould them

Two Types of Anxiety

  • Anxiety 1 Fear of Change
  • Comfort Zone
  • Bounce is Painful
  • Basic Training is Engineered Crisis
  • Flapping Jaws, Complaining, Withdrawing, Blaming Others
  • Game or Battlefield will turn you into pink dust if not ready
  • Anxiety 2 exceeds Anxiety 1
  • Anxiety 2 is Fear of what will happen to you if you don’t change.
  • Options and Control of those fears going down
  • Job of Leader is to convert Anxiety 1 into Anxiety 2 “I might lose my family”

Christmas Ornaments and Oranges

  • Drop an ornament and it shatters – Loss of Altitude like our Team – Tough Times
  • Drop an orange (or rubber ball) and it bounces – Can go higher after surviving

Warren Buffet’s Swim Trunks

  • Meet with your Team and explain and draw Disintegration and Reintegration
  • Keep your eye on the ball
  • Warren Buffet Quote: It’s only when the tide goes out that you find out who’s not wearing swimming trunks.” Be Prepared and don’t get caught standing naked in knee-deep water
  • Let the group hash it out and give ideas and Disintegrate – Never miss a great opportunity!
  • Only blame those in the room not outside factors

Holding Hands in Traffic

  • Bounce literally means resilience…the ability to bounce back is resilience.
  • Past times where it was tough and your team bounced back?
  • MENTAL – SEE REALITY CLEARLY
  • Job of Leader convert Anxiety 1 to Anxiety 2
  • TREAT CAUSES NOT SYMPTOMS
  • ATTACK PROBLEMS NOT PEOPLE
  • DON’T DO SOMETHING JUST STAND THERE
  • We are in control of how we respond not others!!!!!!!!!!
  • HOLD HANDS IN TRAFFIC – Like Mom said

A Mission Misstatement

  • Mental Toughness
  • Mission Statement is a “Crock”
  • What is your purpose?
  • Mission is something SPECIFIC….for a Soldier…Ex: Take a Hill by 0900 hours and hold it
  • Something VITAL….someone may die, maybe you, maybe one of your buddies.
  • All must be committed and then we have the best chance of coming out alive.
  • COMMITMENT TO A MISSION MAKES A TEAM BOUNCE
  • On a football field, in a school, in Afghanistan, or in business
  • MISSION (THE MILITARY TYPE)

Protein for Business

  • Like weight lifting you get stronger by disintegrating muscle fibers, little tears in them
  • You actually get stronger when reintegration takes place and more muscle fiber builds
  • Same with people and groups and teams
  • Muscles get weaker before getting stronger (the process)
  • Eat protein to build muscles, companies need money to grow!
  • WHAT IS THE PROTEIN FOR OUR TEAM OR SCHOOL?

Saving Corporate from Itself

  • Absorbing Anxiety above at the next level…Up the Chain of Command
  • Team meeting to find the Protein in our business

Leave it to Einstein

“The significant problems we are facing cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.”

  • Focus on US NOT CORPORATE (FACTORS OUTSIDE US)
  • Create something new to be on the cutting edge of the marketplace
  • Look at your numbers and find the PROTEIN NEEDED TO CHANGE

My Life as a Tool

  • Complaining daughter at home
  • Converting Anxiety 1 – Fear of Change to Anxiety 2 – Fear of what will happen if we don’t
  • Daughter will have to become an adult with privileges
  • A Life, B Life, C Life – You decide but how….do well get privileges and things…if not Anxiety 2 will set in!!!!

Vexed in the City

  • Buying a TV and Saturday Geek Day at DigitalCity
  • His Military Friend works there! Stateside Gig!
  • Way to capable to be here
  • Examine your people!! Their capabilities will blow you away and help your team!

The Last Twenty People on the Boat

  • What special capabilities does each person have on the floor that we are unaware of?
  • Go know your people!
  • Invite the Joe’s to your company Disintegration. (Joe’s…his military smart, tough, Army Ranger friend who worked at DigitalCity for a stateside job)
  • The Brains not the Pains…THE LAST 21 PEOPLE YOU WOULD WANT ON A BOAT

Too Many Hills

  • What qualities do you have that you are most proud of? (with the Joes)
  • How did you obtain this quality? The story
  • What is the MOST IMPORTANT HILLS TO TAKE NOW TO IMPROVE?
  • CAN’T TAKE EVERY HILL AT ONCE!!

Going to War

  • Work late, order out and figure it out!
  • Get the Staff and the Joes to begin the PROCESS OF REINTEGRATION
  • GO TO WAR, DO THE WORK.

An Unbroken Tiebreaker

  • Once you build morale don’t let Moron Morale mess it up!
  • No Moron Morale….pizza for staff, card on your birthday…etc
  • Military sense morale..ARE YOU GIVING THEM SOMETHING WORTH FIGHTING FOR?

Great Leaders

  1. Mental Toughness
  2. Leader sees things as they really are
  3. One who pushes me to the root cause of things
  4. Seizes initiative!
  5. Does not blame outside forces
  6. Holds Hands in Traffic
  7. The good of the outfit before himself
  8. Compelling Missions!
  9. Involve others in the mission – Representation in solving the biggest problems
  • They will run through walls for you!
  • ADD MORALE (THE MILITARY TYPE) TO THE CHART ABOVE

  • Face to face time with everyone laid off.

Gift from Kabul

  • $ 10 million dollar project and a two-year order
  • RED Strategy…Reintegrate Every Day
  • Less time getting the right people but getting the people right.
  • Learn to Manage Your Own Bounce
  • The Gift is a Racquetball in desert camouflage colors.
  • Keep Bouncing Bro

A Moron Mission is one in which you try to take too many hills at once, while a military mission is one in which to you take ONE HILL SUCCESSFULLY AT A TIME!
