The Antigone Movie Trailer

PROJECT

Movie trailers (i.e., previews) tell the story of a movie in a highly condensed fashion with maximum appeal. Trailers are highly polished pieces of advertising that present even the poorest of movies in an attractive light. They dramatize and maximize conflict in an effort to cram people into the theater.

The progression of a typical movie trailer:

I.  The beginning lays out the premise of the story.

II.  The middle drives the story further and usually ends with a dramatic climax.

III.  The end usually features a strong piece of "signature music" (either a recognizable song or a powerful, sweeping orchestral piece) and often consists of a visual montage of powerful and emotional moments of the film and may also contain a cast run if there are noteworthy stars that could help sell the movie.

Other elements in movie trailers:

·  Voice-over narration is used to briefly set up the premise of the movie and provide explanation when necessary (usually a man with a deep voice).

·  Music helps set the tone and mood of the trailer.

·  A list of the stars that will appear in the movie. If the director or producer is well-known or has made other popular movies, they often warrant a mention as well.

YOUR TASK (in groups of 3-4):

Using the elements described above, create a 1-2 minute movie trailer for Antigone.

You have the choice of be ACTING IT OUT (which means scheduling time for rehearsal) or FILMING IT (which will require some after school/weekend time and editing). Maximize your creativity! Incorporate music, props, simple costumes, etc.

In your planning, consider highlighting/dramatizing the following internal and external conflicts:

ÿ  The Oedipus family curse

ÿ  Argos vs. Thebes

ÿ  Polynices vs. Eteocles

ÿ  Antigone vs. Creon

ÿ  Antigone vs. Ismene

ÿ  Haemon vs. Creon

ÿ  Creon vs. himself
