Theprimary responsibilities of the Director of Publications include the overalldirection and management of the Publications Office;overseeing the assignmentsof the editorial staff and freelance editors and designers; working withexcavation directors andauthors to develop and produce assigned monographs; coordinatingthe review process for all submitted manuscripts;collaborating with the EditorofHesperia; overseeing marketing and distribution; negotiatingfinancial arrangements with printers andfulfillment agencies; investigatingalternative sources of funding for publications; and exploring and developingnew avenues--digitalor other--for American School publications.
The Director is also expected to overseestaff in the Publications Office; write regularly scheduled performancereviews; createand administer an annual departmental budget; prepare regularreports for the ASCSA Managing Committee, Board of Trustees,and Committee onPublications; and maintain and expand the ASCSA Publications web page. The Directorworks closely with thechair of the Committee on Publications and reports tothe chair of the Managing Committee.
Requirements:BA degree, with an advanced degree preferred;at least five years managerial experience in a publishingenvironment; backgroundin classical archaeology, Classics, ancient art, or a related field preferred;and demonstrated knowledgeof digital publishing and current trends inscholarly communication.
Alongsidearchaeological exploration, teaching, and research, publication is one of thecore ASCSA missions. Since its founding in1881, the ASCSA has published almost250 books. These include major reports and studies on material culturerecovered duringexcavations at the Athenian Agora, Ancient Corinth, and othersites that are essential reference works for all scholars of theancient world.Since 1932, the ASCSA has also published the award-winning quarterly journalHesperia,one of the leadingperiodicals in the field. The increasingly digital nature ofscholarship is transforming the nature of publication in this field, and theDirector of Publications contributes to institution-wide initiatives to supportnew modes of scholarly communication.
