C. Characters

Make a list of all the characters you encounter in this novel on a separate piece of paper. As you learn information about each of these people, add it to your character list. This will help you keep all of the names straight in your mind and will help you study for the tests.

D. Questions. Find quotes from the novel to support all points.

1. Why does Jamie go live with Angus? Where is this place? How does each of them feel about this?

2. Why do Angus and Alphonse leave? Whom do they leave in charge in the Cree camp?

3. Compare and contrast the personalities of Jamie and Awasin. Use situations from the novel to support your ideas.

4. Who are the Deer Eaters? Why are they called this? Is it a positive, negative, or neutral name?

5. What do we know so far about the following aboriginal peoples: the Cree, the Chipewayans, and the Eskimos? How are they different from each other? How do they get along with each other?

6. Awasin makes a big decision on page 19 (Blue p. 25). Why does he make this choice? Do you think it is a wise choice?

7. Read the last paragraph on page 34 (Blue p. 45) about the Kazon river. Imagine that you are the boys - what would you be feeling at this moment in the novel. Explain.

8. Awasin gives Jaime a new name in this section. What is it? Explain how he got this name.

9. Making predictions. Using ideas from section 1 of this novel, try to make some guesses about what is going to happen in the next sections of the story.
