The 45thHillsDistrict & BunyaGarden Competition

“Celebrating 45 Years”

Welcome to Presentation Day 2013

Forty-five years ago the Arana Hills District Progress Association, in conjunction with the Ferny Hills Progress Association, commenced what is now known as “The Hills District” & Bunya Garden Competition. This competition was started with a view to beautify the District and to reward those residents whose gardens were considered the best. The Ferny Hills Progress Association now undertakes sole legal responsibility for running our competition. We sincerely thank Brian Battersby for his continued support, which enables our committee to function successfully.

The committee which runs this competition is made up of interested residents who commence meetings in April each year. They have the task of planning, setting dates, arranging promotions, gathering sponsorship, selecting trophies and encouraging gardeners to participate. The streamlined procedures set in place over the years ensure our event runs smoothly - please think about joining. This year we were joined by Laura Creagh, whose fresh input has been highly valuable and instrumental in establishing our facebook page (www.facebook.com/HDBGC). We do not need to fund raise and it’s a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Although competition entry is free and rewards are plentiful, many gardeners are still reluctant to enter and this is our greatest challenge.

The Arana Hills Library has been extremely supportive. We heldan official launch and plant swap here in June. We were assisted by Kim Pantano from the Kumbartcho Nursery, who gave an interesting and informative presentation. Steve Jones, our long standing major sponsor, has been joined by Pure Tennis, who have taken over the management of the Wahminda Park Tennis Courts from the Ferny Hills Progress Association.

This year we had twenty-two entries with seven new entrants. Judging this year was again carried out by Noel and Heather Prior. We thank them for this continued support and donating their precious time voluntarily to our garden competition. We’re sure the gardeners appreciate their constructive criticism and the committee happily takes on board their recommendations.

Our sincere thanks must go to all our sponsors whose generosity has resulted in donations of over $2,000 in goods and services. Special thanks must go to Pure Tennis and Steve Jones Hardware and Landscape Centre for their generous support. Please ensure you shop with all of our sponsors as our competition is dependent on their community involvement. Their only reward is our advertising so they deserve our patronage.

The committee thanks you for your support of our garden competition and your attendance here today. We hope you enjoy your afternoon with us and look forward to seeing you again.Thank you for helping to beautify our part of the MoretonBay Regional Council. Please join us for light refreshments after the presentation of trophies.
