The 2ndAnnual Tour de Donut, Sponsored by the Rotary Club of American Fork

Playing upon the hype of one of the world’s largest sporting events, the Tour de France, the American Fork Rotary continues its annual fundraising event – The Utah Tour de Donut. This is a criterium style bicycle race with a unique twist. Participants will ride three 7 mile loops with a mandatory stop at the start/finish area of each loop where they will have the opportunity to earn a three minute time deduction for each donut eaten.

History

The inaugural Utah Tour de Donut was held in conjunction with American Fork Steel Days in July 2008. We anticipated approximately 100 participants and we exceeded our expectations with nearly 250 registered cyclists, including people from as far away as Texas, Nevada and Colorado. Many participants have indicated that this event was a highlight of the cycling year and are excited to return for this year’s event. We are receiving inquiries daily via e-mail, local cycling shops and community leaders for information about this year’s Tour de Donut and when registration will be available.

Vision

The Utah Tour de Donut, while spoofing the Tour de France (which is held during the same time of year) is already becoming a premier bicycling event for Utah cyclists in only its second year. We anticipate 400-500 participants this year. Our plan is to bring on sponsoring partners who fit the race and who will gain quality exposure from our marketing efforts and in the race itself.

Purpose

The Utah Tour de Donut is a fundraising effort of the American Fork Rotary Club. The funds raised will be used primarily for the Kona Bicycles / Biketown Africa Program. This program is a joint effort of Kona Bicycles, Bicycling Magazine and Bristol-Myers Squibb to provide bicycles and medications to several countries in sub-Sahara Africa to provide AIDS/HIV treatment. Since its launch in 2005 over 3000 all-steel bikes have been delivered to healthcare workers. The rugged terrain of this area makes it difficult to treat AIDS/HIV patients in outlying communities. With these AfricaBikes healthcare workers can triple the number of daily visits they make. In 2009 the program seeks to deliver AfricaBikes to Tanzania, South Africa, Burkina Faso and Mali. (For more information go to and/or ).

The American Fork Rotary Club will also use a percentage of the funds raised for other local humanitarian projects (for example: scholarships for high school seniors, Amber Alert ID project, etc.)

Logistics

We have teamed up with American Fork City to make the Utah Tour de Donut the kick off event for Steel Days (American Fork’s annual city celebration). The race will be staged from Greenwood Elementary School in American Fork on July 11, 2009(route enclosed). This is a family friendly event multiple division for age group and gender, including an untimed youth division. Participants will pay $30 as a registration fee. This fee includes a t-shirt (with the Tour de Donut logo and logos of participating sponsors), race entry fee, snacks (donuts), drinks, and prizes. Registration will primarily be handled online, however mail-in registrations will be accepted as well.

We anticipate 400-500 riders in this year, increasing to 800+ riders per year after 3 years.
