All college/university students

  • Under the age of 30
  • of foreign nationality
  • born and raised overseas
  • first language is NOT Chinese
  • haven’t participated in the semi-final and final competition held in China 2010
  1. Rules & Procedures

The “ChineseBridge” competition is divided into three phases: preliminaries, semi-finals and finals. Preliminaries will be held in foreign countries all over the world, while semi-finals and finals will be held in China. All candidates must attend preliminaries. The top winners will be competing in the semi-finals & finals in China.

The return tickets and the costs of lodging, meals and transportation for the contestants who will compete in China will be provided by the organising committee.

  1. Rules & Procedures of the UK Preliminary Competition

UK PreliminaryCompetition is divided into three phases: first round, semi-final and final. First round will be held by each competing organisation individually (i.e. Confucius Institutes, Department of Chinese Studies & related majors in universities, Language Centres in universities, etc.) while the semi-final and final will be held by UK PreliminaryCompetition Organizing Committee.

A. First Round

First round will be held by each competing organisation individually. The competition format, date and venue will be arranged by each organisation and in principle, the top two contestants will be selected to participate in the UK semi-final competition.

B. Semi-final

UK Semi-final will be held in the afternoon of 19th March, 2011 by grouping.

C. Final & Report-back Performance

UK Final & Report-back Performance will be held in the evening of 19th March 2011. Some of the semi-final contestants and contestants of the previous years will be invited to give performance during the event.

  1. Schedule of the UK Preliminary Competition

A. First Round:

  1. The competition will take place during the 1st and 2nd week of February 2011. The format, date and venue will be arranged by each competing organisation individually.
  2. The following results shall be submitted to the Organising Committee by Monday 14th February, 2011:

a)List of Winners of the First Round;

b)Summary of the First Round;

c)Pictures of the competition;

d)Name list and Application Forms of the chosen contestants for the UK Semi-final.

B. Semi-final

UK Semi-final will be held in the afternoon of 19th March, 2011.

C. Final & Report-back Performance

UK Final & Report-back Performance will be held in the evening of 19th March 2011.

Format:

  1. Speech with Self-selected Topic: 3 minutes

(Including a brief introduction in Chinese about yourself)

  1. Cultural Knowledge Quizzes: 2 minutes

(Answer questions about Chinese culture and knowledge. A collection of contest questions will be released on a later date before the Competition)

  1. Talent Performance: 3 minutes

Contestants can choose to perform Chinese songs, music, dance, folk arts, acrobatics, musical instruments, calligraphy, paper cutting and kungfu, etc, to showcase a unique form of talent.

  1. Unlike the previous UK Preliminary Competitions which held the final competition only, the 10th UK Preliminary Competition will carry out the first round, the semi-final and the final, aiming to further promote the competition, get more students involved in the event and select more outstanding contestants.
  2. 2011 marks the 10thAnniversary of the “ChineseBridge”Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students. The Organizing Committee of the UK Preliminary Competition will host a series of events to reflect on the past 10 years of the Chinese promotion in the UKand produce a special issue of publication.
  3. Outstanding contestants in the UK Semi-final and final will be provided the opportunities for internships in the UK Chinese enterprises.
  4. Apart from the competition itself, this year’s event also offers a unique opportunity of job seeking and interviews for students who have Chinese language specialities. Manywell-known UK Chinese organisations and companies from different sectors across the country will be invited to participate in the event. The contestants and the audience students will have the opportunities to network with the employers and gain an insight into the joband work experiencewithin the Chinese companies in the UK. The students are encouraged to bring along their C.V. and recommend themselves at the event to the potential employers.
  5. Format of awards will continue as from last year’s event to further encourage and promote Chinese studies among UK youth learners.

A. Collecting of Competition Questions

In order to assess the contestants’Chinese language proficiency and the understanding of the Chinese culturemore scientifically and fairly, the Organising Committee sincerely inviteall people concerned to provide high quality competition questions. Details will follow.

B. Hunting Excellent Compere

To ensure the smooth running of the competition and presenting of the performances, the Organising Committee craves for excellent Compere for the Final on the night of 19th March. All are welcome to enrol and compete. Details will follow.

C. Senior Judges Call-up

Judges for the UKSemi-final and Final are open to all Chinese teachers in the UK. All are welcome to enrol. The Panel of judges will be selected by the Organising Committee.

D. Materials Collecting

The special issue of publication on Chinese language promotion in the UK will be produced in the celebration of the 10th Anniversary of “ChineseBridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition. All organisations concerned are welcome to provide materials to be presented in the publication. Details will follow.
