Welcome, and thanks for being here this evening. Many thanks too, for taking the time to read through, sign and return the forms (and more forms) we’ve sent home. We appreciate your prompt responses.

I have been delighted by the arrival of enthusiastic students who are ready to work and eager to participate. They are a positive reflection of the emphasis that you, as parents/guardians, have placed on education, and our first days have run very smoothly.

I hope that you will perceive the Olive Drive school staff, and myself in particular, as resources you may draw upon to make this the best, and most productive year it can be for your student. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can help you in any way.

Thanks again for your presence here tonight.

Norris Website: Additional school information and important dates may be obtained by visiting the Norris School District web page. This address should also be used to find class assignments and newsletters.

Camp KEEP: Sixth grade students have the opportunity to spend 5 days(3/5/18 - 3/9/18) at Camp KEEP experiencing nature and the surrounding wildlife. It is not only a valuable learning experience; it is a chance for individuals to appreciate the comforts of home. Children are responsible for paying their share of the trip, which is approximately $300.00 Some parents are welcome to join us as counselors. KEEP is an unforgettable experience for all who attend.

Discipline & Classroom Management: Discipline is administered in a very positive manner. Many problems are avoided by calling attention to appropriate behavior. Each child is responsible for his/her own actions. By working together, we hope to create an environment where every child develops socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. Verbal warnings are the first step in discipline. Visual warnings are next with a student writing his/her name on a clipboard with the reason for the warning. Parents are contacted for serious or habitual problems.

Rewards: Students who remain on task will have a free seating privilege. This renews weekly with everyone starting Monday with a clean slate. Students, who do not sign the clipboard receive a ticket on Friday. They can use or save these tickets in a weekly drawing for prizes. Our class will bank "quiet minutes" everyday to be used on Fridays in a fun activity. Those students who do not sign the clipboard all month will be invited to have lunch in the classroom. Various rewards are also given for academics, AR, and participation.

Consequences: Students who sign the clipboard will not receive a ticket for the drawing. Students, who sign the clipboard 2 times in one day or 3 times in a week, will lose a recess. If this becomes a habit, parents will be notified. For any serious issue (fighting, extreme disrespect or disruptive behavior) parents will be notified and the student may be sent to the principal.

Homework Policy: Students need to keep an up-to-date "Planner" which will help students to remember deadlines and test dates. Students are encouraged to wisely use class time to complete these assignments. Assignments are always listed online.

Parent Conferences: You may request a conference at any time during the year. I realize that you know your child better than anyone else, and I welcome any tips or insight that will help your child in any way. My door is always open, and your input is important to me.
