5Guest Speakers :-

Superintendent Rebecca MEARS spoke on restructuring of Thames Valley Police from 1JUNE and also on Cyber Crime. Below is a short summary of Rebecca 's Cyber Crime presentation.

Rebecca gave an example of what happens in an “Internet Minute in 2017”: 900,000 log- ins re Face book ; 3.5million search queries for Google ; 4.1 million Videos viewed on You Tube ; 70,017 hours watched on Netflix ; 452,000 million Text Messages ; and many more examples.

What is at Stake: money, your privacy and your health, BUT as much as 80% of Cyber Crime is easily prevented by taking simple steps.

Protecting yourself: Phishing & Social Engineering

Phishing – often criminals pose as “legitimate companies”.

E- mail hundreds of people to request information.

If you reply or follow a link to enter your personal details, criminals have everything they need to steal your identity.

Top Prevention Tips:Be cautious of e-mails or phone calls that request your personal details.

If you are unsure about an e-mail or phone call, call the company.

Do not reply to phishing e-mails.

/6

6/

Computer Service Software Fraud: Phone calls pretending to be from companies telling you that your computer is running slowly and has a virus.

The fraudsters will ask you for your card details to remove the virus from your device.

You will never be contacted by a company to say that you have a virus and for a fee it can be fixed. Never give your bank account details to someone who cold calls.

Websites : Look for https at the start of the website address and the green padlock.

Choose reputable shopping sites.

Make sure you always log out.

Avoid making transactions on public WiFi.

Social Media :Social media is a great way to stay in touch with friends and relatives. However, it is also a tool that Cyber Criminals can use.

People can find out a lot about you from your social media account.

Anthony STANSFELD spoke on his new Police and Crime Commissioner plan for Berks, Bucks and Oxon. He stated he had 5 Priorities:

Vulnerability – particular focus on mental health, elderly abuse, hidden abuse and criminal justice experience for victims of sexual and domestic abuse.

Prevention & Early Intervention – Tackling Cyber Crime, Hate crime, and Female Genital Mutilation.

Reducing Offending – Focus on substance misuse and violence involving weapons.

Serious Organised Crime and Terrorism – Improving local response and public awareness.

Police Ethics and reform – improve report for victims.

Demands on policing and community safety concerns have changed over the last few years. Mental Health are placing an ongoing demand on police and partners, as well as an increase on reporting of domestic and sexual abuse. He mentioned a recent survey on Adults and young people. The majority of adults were happy with the service that the police provided, but young people's perception of the police was not so good so they needed to work with this group.

*****

Chris HOLDEN – spoke on Cons and Scams and gave an example of elderly people are being tricked into paying out huge sums of money carried out on their property, which was not necessary. He also stated that a large number of elderly, lonely and

those who do not go out receive huge amounts of junk mail. In Buckinghamshire, over the last 2 years a total of £150,000 has been taken from victims who have been preyed upon by mail scams.

These scammers usually target the over 80's with promises of big cash prizes or lottery wins, asking their victims to send money, that promises big wins.

Chris gave advice on how to stay safe, and if you know of someone being tricked into sending out their details or cash please contact Trading Standards. Chris also mentioned Street Associations and in order to clarify the differences between Street Associations, Neighbourhood Watch and Neighbourhood Actions Groups - please see the following clarification.

A Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG is a partnership of Police, residents, Councils and other local organisations so that it represents the local community. Its role is to focus on, and tackle, local issues related to crime and the fear of crime in their area. Priorities are set by sending a questionnaire to local residents to determine their three top issues. These are selected to be realistic, achievable and the output measurable. The NAG takes actions via its participants themselves or accessing resources from their respective organisations.

Street Associations are set up to bring together neighbours to help one another. They can cover a very broad range of activities. In the case of the Hughenden Parish pilot, its role is to get volunteers to act as the eyes and ears to identify neighbours who need some form of assistance. The volunteers are provided with a pack that contains information to allow them to signpost a large range of support from Police/medical contacts to organisations that assist with shopping/travel and local events to overcome loneliness.

Neighbourhood Watch is about local people coming together to create safe, attractive, friendly places to live, places where crime is less likely to happen and people are less likely to turn to anti-social behaviour. It’s about looking out for your neighbours and them looking out for you, crossing barriers of age, race and class for everyone’s good. It’s about making sure that no one need feel alone, scared or vulnerable in the place where they live.

*****

Graham LOXTON-BEST gave an interesting talk on a day in the life of a courtroom. He explained the differences between the courtrooms and the various roles of justice departments within the Magistrate courts.

A Magistrate court begins at 10 am and deals mainly with motoring offences, minor assaults etc.

Magistrates are Justices of the Peace and they are local people who volunteer their service. They do not require formal training but need to go on a training course.

All criminal court cases starts in a Magistrate Court. More serious offences are passed onto Crown Court.

A Circuit Judgedeals with civil, criminal and family cases. The District Judge in the Magistrate Courts is a qualified Solicitor or Barrister and deals with criminal cases from start to finish.
