TFD 101: HISTORY OF EDUCATION

Course description

The course examines the development of educational theory and practice from the beginning of human civilization to the present. The course is divided into four sections; education in ancient societies, developments from the medieval period to the modern times, educational developments in Africa from the pre-colonial period to the present and lastly, educational developments in Kenya from the pre-colonial period to the present.

Course objectives

At the end of the course the students should be able to:

  1. Discuss the importance of history of education in teachers education,
  2. Explain the main determinants of education from ancient societies to the present,
  3. Analyse the influence of western education on the evolution of modern education in Africa, and
  4. Examine the contribution of some of the great educators to modern education.
