Course Description:

Nutrition and Wellness is an introductory course valuable for all students as a life foundation and academic enrichment; it is especially relevant for students interested in careers related to nutrition, food, and wellness. This class introduces students to only the basics of food preparation so they can become self-sufficient in accessing healthy and nutritious foods. Major course topics include:

·  nutrition principles and applications

·  influences on nutrition and wellness

·  food preparation, safety, and sanitation

·  science, technology, and careers in nutrition and wellness

Class Rules and Procedures:

Every Day Supplies:

textbook, notebook, paper, pencil/pen, folder

Tardy Policy:

The tardy policy in the student handbook will be strictly enforced.

Hallway passes:

Hallway passes including passes to the bathroom, locker, other teacher, office, water fountain, nurse (unless extreme emergency) etc. will be granted but the student will receive a tardy. Please remember that after 3 tardies disciplinary action will be taken according to the student handbook. All students must sign in and out before leaving and upon return.

Equipment:

1.  Each student is expected to have their own sewing box and the equipment necessary for sewing. See the Sewing Supply list for further details.

2.  Each student is expected to supply their own fabric and accessories for sewing projects in a timely manner.

3.  Tote trays are provided for student use but must be kept orderly.

Absences:

1.  It is your responsibility to retrieve any make-up assignments immediately upon your return.

2.  It is your responsibility to schedule a make-up work session after school or before school 24 hours in advance if needed.

3.  Make-up work has to be made up within the same number of days plus 1. (Ex: you were absent on Monday you have Monday and Tuesday to work on the assignment and you must turn it in Wednesday). You must label your make-up work as “ABSENT” at the top of your paper.

Projects and Assignments:

1.  All assignments are due at the BEGINNING of class unless otherwise stated.

2.  Late assignments are NOT accepted.

3.  All projects must be completed in the classroom. If any part of the project is completed at home and has not been approved by Ms. Malagon, it will result in automatic class failure.

4.  Everyone will be given one free homework pass at the beginning of the semester. They are NOT valid on group projects, individual projects, reports, labs or any other major projects.

5.  You may keep your projects and Clothing book in my classroom. Please be aware that I am not responsible for any damage or loss. Please keep track of all of your materials!

6.  During sewing labs, you are to prepare your material and sew on your own.

Classroom Management:

1.  If you bring a food item or beverage to this class you must dispose of it and clean up your mess!

2.  No playing cards, dice, game systems, iPods, cell phones, or other electronic appliances are NOT allowed during instruction and testing time.

3.  Students may not sit on window ledges, desktops, or countertops in the classroom.

4.  No profanity of horse play will be tolerated during class.

5.  Items on or in my desk, cabinets, drawers, closets, bookshelves, and tables are off limits to students unless otherwise stated.

6.  Name calling, teasing, physical or verbal bullying of any kind will not be tolerated.

7.  Students who leave class before I dismiss will receive a “0” for all work completed and turned in that day.

1.  If sewing materials and/or tools are not put away they will be thrown away and student will loose work day points.

Class Dismissal:

All students are dismissed once everyone is in their assigned seat, quiet, room neat, chairs and tables in original positions and all supplies are put away.
