RATIONALE:

  1. The Psychology program is moving to a one-semester introductory course rather than the existing two-semester course,in keeping with the common practice at 90% of undergraduate psychology programs. This allows us to offer the option of a second, more specialized course appropriate for beginning students.
  2. Statistics is a gateway course in a psychology curriculum and should be taken before moving to more advanced courses. In addition, this course is valuable in allowing students to change majors early if psychology is not a good fit.
  3. Experimental Psychology is a gateway course in a psychology curriculum and should be taken before moving to more advanced courses. In addition, this course is valuable in allowing students to change majors early if psychology is not a good fit.
  4. PSYC 4312, Physiological Psych, and PSYC 4328, Perception, will be our WI courses. PSYC 43XX[4350], ref. PSYC-14-U-6, is essentially a renumbering of PSYC 3304, Psych of Learning.
  5. PSYC 4322, Personality, and PSYC 4325, Abnormal, overlap substantially; requiring both is somewhat redundant.
  6. The new courses PSYC 43XX[4301], Cross Cultural Psychology, ref. PSYC-14-U-10, and PSYC 43XX[4303], ref. PSYC-14-U-7, Environmental Psychology, are more suitable alternatives to PSYC 3301, Social Psychology, and PSYC 4302, Industrial/Organizational, than PSYC 4308, Testing, is.
  7. Cognitive Psychology, PSYC 43XX[4329], ref. PSYC-14-U-3, is an essential topic in current psychology.
  8. The material covered in Biological Psychology, PSYC 43XX[4330], ref. PSYC-14-U-4, and Evolutionary Psychology PSYC 33XX[3325], ref. PSYC-14-U-5, is central to the science of psychology.
  9. This makes room for changes 2 and 3.
  10. The present plan falls short in advanced hours. Also, splitting these electives between terms makes the requirement of two courses more apparent.
  11. Splitting these Minor hours between terms makes the requirement of two courses more apparent.
