GOD’s church for his mission
Reverend Bill Crowder
9July 2017
Scripture:Romans 15:1 – 9
Summary statement:The church is called to be a relational community with a mission, but we cannot do that without God’s heart.
Summary:
Francis Schaeffer once said that “[e]ach generation of the church in each setting has the responsibility of communicating the gospel in understandable terms, considering the language and thought-forms of that setting.”We, as a church, must work together to reach our community (and other communities) with God’s message in such a way that it transforms their hearts.
Scripture Reading & Discovery:
In the next few minutes, turn to Romans 15:1 – 13.
Insights into studying the Word together / Discussion Questions:
- With close reference to v.1, to whom is “the strong” and “the weak” that Paul is referring to in our Christian communities?
- With close reference to v. 2 – 3, what verbsdoes Paul use to advise ‘stronger’ Christians on how they can “bear with the failings of the weak”? How do you think that Christians can go about acting out his suggestion?
- In v. 4, Paul writes that the endurance taught in the Scriptures encourage us in our daily walk with God.
How have the Scriptures encouraged you in your walk?
- With close reference to v. 5 to 6, what is the “same attitude of mind” that Paul is exhorting us to adopt?
- Paul begins Romans 15 by making reference to the “strong” and “weak” separately. How has this ‘segregation’ transformed by v. 6?
- In v. 7, Paul once again exhorts the strong to “accept” the weak and vice versa. In v. 8 to 9, how does Jesus model the kind of love and acceptance that should be demonstrated to each other?
Applications:
- What are some ways in which you can build up another Christian?
