Vocabulary Term Definition Illustration

Jews / A person who follows the religion of Judaism.
Judaism / A religion who believes in one God- followers are called Jews.
Arabs / An ethnic group who can trace their ancestors to the original tribe of Arabia.
Kurds / An ethnic group found in parts of Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon, and Armenia.
Persians / An ethnic group that originates from Iran (Persia) and still lives in regions around Persian Gulf.
Christianity / A religion who believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. One of the monotheistic religions.
Islam / A religion founded by the prophet Muhammad whose followers are called Muslims.
Muhammad / The Arabic prophet who founded Islam.
Allah / In Islam, they refer to “God” as “Allah”.
Qur’an / The Holy Book of Islam.
Muslims / Followers of Islam.
Five Pillars of Islam / 5 things all Muslims must do during their lifetime according to the Qur’an:
1.  Belief in one God
2.  Pray 5x/day
3.  Give alms to the poor.
4.  Fasting during Ramadan= their holy month
5.  Hajj- a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once.
Sunni Muslims / 1 faction of Islam: they do not believe that leaders of Islam have to be the blood descendants of Muhammad.
Shia Muslims / 1 faction of Islam: they believe that only blood relatives of Muhammad have the right to lead.
Abraham / A prophet in all 3 religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam who travelled from Iraq to Israel following the command of God.
Jesus / A Jew who founded Christianity.
Ottoman Empire / The greatest and longest lasting Islamic Empire; what is today Turkey. Included parts of Europe, North Africa and into Asia. Lasted into the early 20th c.
Mandate System / Under this system, SW Asia was divided (partitioned) b/t France and GBritain.
Artificial Boundaries / Boundaries that were made as a result of WWI that divided ethnic groups and were based on territory.
Anti-Semitism / Hatred of Jews just because they practice the Jewish faith.
Holocaust / A time when over 6 million Jews were killed in Europe by the Nazis.
Zionism / Jewish Nationalism- a return to the Jewish homeland of Israel.
