Tsunami Evacuation Hawaii Map 1: Hilo (Part 1)

Definitions

Tsunami: An unusually large sea wave generally caused by an underwater earthquake.

Evacuation Zone: The area which needs to be evacuated prior to the estimated arrival of a tsunami.

Tsunami Warning: A warning that is issued when there is a high probability of a destructive tsunami impacting coastal areas.

Roadblocks: A roadblock is a physical barrier on a roadway that prevents vehicles from entering an evacuation zone.

Evacuation Zone

The Evacuation Zone for Hawaii Map 1: Hilo (Part 1) extends from the coast to Highway 19 opposite the end of Halaulani Place. The Evacuation Zone extends along the full length of the Bayfront Highway and Kamehameha Avenue to Banyan Drive and Kalanianaole Street into Keaukaha.

The Evacuation Zone on the north (Hamakua side) opposite HalaulaniPlace includes Puueo Street where it crosses Ohai across the Singing Bridge over the Wailuku River. At Waianuenue Avenue, the Evacuation Zone extends up to Kinoole Street past Kalakaua Avenue, to Mamo Street, Kukuau, Hualalai, Hoku Street, Lanihuli and Kamana Street, then east to Kilauea Avenue, south to West Lanikaula Street, east to Iolani Street, north to Leilani Street, east to Hinano Street. The Evacuation Zone continues north past Kekuanaoa Street to Hualani Street and Kanoelehua Avenue including an area half a mile east of Kanoelehua Avenue.
