Testing and Modeling of Automotive Degas Solution (2906)

Target group: Automotive Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Materials Engineering

At RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT you will be a key contributor to the next generation outstanding luxury cars from Volvo. Together with other engineers around the world, you and your team will create innovative human-centric car technology that makes life less complicated and more enjoyable for people. Are you interested in design and connected car technology? Do you share our passion for people, the environment and our urge to create a superior driving experience? Research and Development is the place for you to prosper.

This thesis work will be carried out within the Cooling System department, which is a part of VCC´s Research and Development organization.

The department consists of 50 employees, all dedicated to develop competitive solutions for future cars in a stimulating working atmosphere. The cooling system is divided in 3 groups, inner cooling (engine mounted), outer cooling (C-shop mounted) and a system development group. We are responsible for development of the complete Cooling system in Volvo cars’ engine and car projects.

Cooling system is a fundamental and a high focused area with regards to thermal management and C02 reduction. Our job is in close cooperation with our suppliers and the different car and engine projects. The 3 groups are working close together and have the complete responsibility for the cooling system in the car.

Background

Robust and controlled cooling system solutions are important as heat sensitive components and complexity of the system increase in the automotive industry. In electrified vehicles batteries and other electrical equipment often contain small areas with relative high heat generation. Traditional internal combustion engine vehicles have several locations in the engine with temperatures close to limitations. A trapped air pocket, or in another way, reduced cooling performance could be detrimental to durability and performance. An important part of having a sound and robust cooling system is to ensure that any air introduced into the system is efficiently separated.

Scope

The master thesis work will consist of three parts:

  • Literature study of available, relevant separator technologies.
  • Planning and performing test of current Volvo separator to increase knowledge of important design parameters. Optimize design w.r.t. size, separation performance and pressure drop and give a design proposal.
  • Use the test results to develop 3D CFD simulation method to predict pressure drop and separation efficiency.
The simulations will be performed in the 3D CFD software Star ccm+. The students will work in the cooling system group together with our small team of CFD Engineers. We perform system level (1D) simulations and 3D CFD simulations.
    Profile
  • We are looking for students that are highly motivated and have genuine interest in cars, calculations and product development.
  • Master’s degree students in Automotive engineering, Applied mechanics, Engineering Mathematics and Computational Science, Innovative and Sustainable Chemical Engineering or Product development
  • The student(s) preferably has a history with computational fluid dynamics and has taken courses in CFD and multiphase flow.
  • The student(s) should ideally be familiar with CFD software Star ccm+ or Ansys Fluent and pre-processing software ANSA.
  • Communication skills are important since information will be needed from several different parts of the company.

Duration

  • Period: 1 semester, 30 ECTS points
  • Starting date: January 2018
  • Number of students: Suitable for 1-2 student.

Application

  • Attach your resume and cover letter stating your interests within the given area and your thoughts and credentials.
  • Please note that applications arriving later then the last application date will not be taken in consideration.
