Lesson Objectives:
  • Develop observational skills and encourage children to draw simple conclusions from their observations using scientific language.
  • Recognise the positive impact that exercise can have on their body.
  • Children will understand how to use the data they have gathered to recognise an effect.

Activity: Starter / 10mins / Notes:
  • In pairs discuss benefits of exercise.

Activity: Get ready / 5mins / Notes:
  • Decide which of the three outside activities you will do today.
  • You can do them in any order but only one per day.
  • Distribute the ID codes to children (from teacher login)
  • Play the relevant how-to film for the activity

Activity: Online Tests / 20mins (if one device per child) / Notes:
Children to complete online mood questions and online tests.
If the first time, demonstrate the test s first using the teacher login.
Make sure children complete using their own ID Code. / Materials:
Computer / Tablet with internet access / Web resources:

Activity: Outside Activity / 20mins / Notes:
Complete the chosen outside activity with your class.
Remember, you want the children to retake the online tests as soon as possible after the outside activity.
Do ONE of the following 3 activities per day: / Materials: / Web resources:
1. Bleep test /
  • Measuring equipment for 20m
  • Cones/markers
  • Audio player and speaker
  • Pens

2. Own pace walk / run /
  • Stopwatch or timer for 15mins
  • Access to school field or suitable outside area

Activity: Online Tests
Now children log back on and complete the same online mood and wakefulness questions and online tests.
Make sure children complete using their own ID Code. / Materials:
Computer / Tablet with internet access
Once you have completed the first outside activity and two sets of online tests, complete the above for the other two. Remember to complete activities on separate days.
Activity: Upload data to map / 10mins / Notes:
Once your class has completed the online activities for the final time, you will be able to see your class results under the teacher login. These will include the data you now need to upload to the BBC map page:
  1. The activity which has the most effect on your class
  2. If the affect of this activity on cognition (positive or negative)

Activity: Plenary / 5mins / Notes:
Share the class results, which you can access from your teacher log in.
Hand out copies of the Student review worksheet.
Lead a class discussion based around the questions:
  • How do you think the exercise affected your body?
  • How do you think the exercise affected how you feel?

/ Use the class results and worksheet to help the children answer the questions about the investigation. Compare your class results to others across the UK using the BBC map.
