Technology Department Information

The Technology department requires a dynamic, ambitious and energetic teacher who can motivate and inspire pupils across both Key Stage 3 and 4, to join our forward-thinking Technology Department. Technology is a thriving Faculty at Penryn College and we are committed to continuing to grow Technology subjects within our curriculum which values breadth of opportunities.

The Technology department currently incorporates Resistant Materials, Product Design and Visual Communications (Graphic Design), Food Technology, Textiles and Health and Social Care, under the leadership of two Joint Heads of Faculty. There are currently 5 teaching members of the Technology department in total and two part time technicians.

The successful candidate will enjoy teaching Visual Communications (Graphic Design), Textiles, Food in a supportive and well- resourced department and must be prepared to contribute fully to departmental developments. This includes new GCSE specification planning, National Curriculum changes, fieldwork, ICT, literacy, numeracy and thinking skills; essentially inspiring pupils through their love of the subject.

The current curriculum is designed to inspire and engage, laying the foundations on which KS4 knowledge and skills will be built. The resources to support the schemes of work will reflect those we have developed and continue to develop. In keeping with the topical and dynamic nature of the subject we continually seek to adapt and create new material.

In years 7&8 pupils rotate through 6 areas: Resistant Materials – introduction to the workshop and mechanisms, Product Design – CAD CAM and Electronics including PIC programming, Food, Textiles, Product Design – Designing for a client. In Year 9 topics include: sustainable design in all areas and advanced design and practical skills.

At GCSE, Resistant Materials has historically been very popular and we are running the new AQA Vocational Award in ‘Materials Technology’. We also have a group of Product Design which is aimed at pupils with an interest in Graphics or CAD CAM based projects. This is run through the new AQA ‘GCSE Design Technology’. We are also offering courses in Visual Communication, Fashion and Textiles, and Food.

We are working closely with colleagues in Maths and Science, and local industry, in developing the college's exciting plans for a STEM curriculum and STEM enrichment opportunities.

Department classrooms have SMART boards and the school is very well equipped with CAD CAM equipment, and practical equipment for wood and metal work. Staff and pupils are equipped with IPads.

We look forward to welcoming a new member staff who can develop and share innovative ideas in a successful and enthusiastic department.
