Paper Title: Soldering Iron

Workman 1

Introduction

The engineeringsoldering iron is an electrical tool used to fuse or extract electrical components on a circuit board. Printed circuit boards contain a multitude of small electrical elements implemented in an innumerable number of electronic devices. The iron is 21.59 cm long and tapers in width from the base to the tip. The soldering iron consists of the following parts: the electrical cord, thelightweight handle, the heating element, and the soldering tip (see Photo 1.1).

Discussion

For the following discussion, refer to Figure 1.1 for a multi-viewed photo that lists the primary parts of the soldering iron. The picture is illustrated in sequence with the following information, excluding the power cord.

Electrical Cord

The electrical cordis a protectedcable that transfers electricity from a receptacle to the iron. Inside the cable, copper wires allow electricity to transverse from the receiving end of the cord to the iron. The black electrical cord,“aka” power cord, is made of a protective rubber material measuring 140.97 cm in length and a diameter of 0.952 cm. The cord allows the copper wires to flow through the lightweight handle.

Lightweight Handle

The lightweight handleis a hand-held device that has been ergonomically designed to provide comfort for work. The handle acts as a multipurpose part protecting the copper wires and preventing injury to the user. The handle is sheathed with a small black cushioned grip for enhanced comfort, measuring 4.76 cm and a diameter of 3.175 cm. The lightweight handle is made of a light blue synthetic compound, measuring a total of 12.07 cm in length and increases in diameter from the base at 0.952 cm to the head at 2.54 cm. The handle is a sector that connects the copper wires to the heating element.

Heating Element

The heating element is an electrical device thatconvertselectricity to yieldthermogenic temperatures. The element is a sector of the iron thatabsorbs electricity resulting in the production of intense heat. The exterior of the heating element is made of stainless steel, measuring at 8.572 cm in length and a diameter of 0.952 cm. The base that attaches tothe handleexpands to a diameter of 2.54 cm. The heating element braces the soldering tip for conduction.

Soldering Tip

The soldering tipis a metal instrument that conducts heat generated via the heating element. The apparatus slides into the barrel of the heating element to deliquesce solder before fusing or excerpting electronic components. The soldering tip is made of a copper core for conduction then plated with iron, nickel, and chromium for increased durability (Weller). The soldering tip measures 5.35 cm in length and tapers in diameter starting at the base, from 0.635 cm to 0.317 cm. The soldering tip has afine point for working withsmallelectrical components.

Conclusion

A soldering iron is an electrical tool used to fuse or extract electrical components on a printed circuit board. The soldering iron consists of the following parts: the electrical cord, that provides power; the lightweight handle, for comfort and protection; a heating element, that uses electricity to produce heat; and the soldering tip, for melting solder. This soldering iron can reach a max temperature of 850°F and is the go-to tool for Computer and Electrical Engineers (Wp 35).
