The RoleThe purpose of the role is to supportBrighton Students’ Union (BSU) and BSU Societies at Falmer in activities and events that involvesound or music.You will be line managed by the Falmer Campus Organiser.

The Hours The rate of pay is £7.50 per hour. Although much of the work is on an adhoc basis dependent upon BSU activities and events taking place, there are regular elements of the role attracting a minimum commitment of 10 hours per month, to include regular team meetings and a monthly check of equipment. This is a zero hour contract. A minimum commitment of 1 semester is required.

The place of work the role is based at Falmer, however you should be willing to work at other location, should the need arise. Travel expenses will be paid if travel to events outside Falmer campus is required.

Role Description
1 / Audit and Maintenance of Equipment
1.1 / Complete a full audit of all instruments and equipment at the start and end of the academic year:
  • Complete inventory of all sound equipment and instruments managed by BSU;
  • Ensure all sound equipment and instruments are tested appropriately;
  • Liaise with Operations manager to ensure that all equipment requiring Portable Appliance Testing maintains a valid PAT certificate;
  • Liaise with BSU regarding any repairs/replacements/disposal of equipment/kit necessary;
  • Report any suspected misuse of equipment/kit.

1.2 / Complete a monthly inventory of equipment:
  • Check kit against inventory;
  • Liaise with BSU regarding any repairs/replacements/disposals of equipment/kit necessary ;
  • Ensure the kit is stored appropriately;

2 / Liaise with Societies
2.1 / Coordinate the use of instruments and sound equipment by societies.
2.2 / Identity needs, and if required provide appropriate training, of society members in relation to their use of BSU instruments and sound equipment.
3 / Support Events
3.1 / Liaise with BSU event staff on events requiring sound technician support to identify equipment required is available.
3.2 / Set up equipment, carry out sound checks to ensure placement, volume and quality of sound.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training /
  • Working towards a qualification at the University of Brighton

Experience /
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of using a wide variety of sound equipment, electronics and acoustics
  • Demonstrable knowledge of a wide variety of musical instruments
  • Experience of working/volunteering in customer relations and/or working with members of the public
  • Understanding of BSU, BSU Societies and events.

Skills /
