Conahy Notes

HURLING

The junior hurlers were up against Piltown in Jenkinstown in the opening round of the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Junior Hurling League on Saturday night last and picked up a deserved victory in what was a most entertaining game. The first half began in great style for Conahy when Shane Brennan scored an early goal. The visitors did fight back, however, but Conahy still held a 1-10 to 0-9 advantage. Piltown showed equally good character to level the scores early in the second half but Conahy regained their composure to open a lead again over the Southerners. A late goal from Piltown did cause some nervousness amongst the locals, but once again Conahy were able to show calmness in seeing out the game, eventually winning by 1-22 to 2-16.

STREET LEAGUE

The finals of the 2017 Conahy Shamrocks Underage Street leagues took place in the Polo Grounds, Jenkinstown on Sunday morning last. The Conahy Shamrocks Bórd na nÓg decided to run the Street leagues at the start of the year, this year, rather than at the end of the season. The leagues were another great success and were greatly enjoyed by all the young boys and girls. Well done to all the players, the mentors and their parents/guardians. Refreshments were served afterwards in the Conahy Shamrocks GAA Club House.

CAMOGIE

Congratulations to Danielle Morrissey and Roisín Phelan who were part of the Kilkenny Senior Camogie panel who defeated Cork in the National Camogie League Final played in Limerick on Sunday last. Danielle was one of Kilkenny’s key players in their 2-7 to 0-10 victory, securing the title for the second year in the row.

Conahy Junior camogie girls also got off to a winning start in the intermediate league with a good win over James Stephens on Sunday last. This was a very competitive game from the starts with both teams going point for point in the first twenty minutes. A goal from Danielle Morrissey put Conahy ahead but James Stephens got the next few points to close the gap. Half time score Conahy 1-6 James Stephens 0-8. The second half started good for Conahy as they got an early goal but James Stephens replied with one of their own to keep in touch. Great team work by the Conahy girls was rewarded with another goal from Lorraine Kennedy and some well taken points late on gave Conahy a well-deserved victory on a score line of 3-10 to 1-9.
