Conahy Notes

HURLING

The junior hurlers continued on winning ways as they overcame Dicksboro in the quarter-finals of the Paddy Cahill Cup in Jenkinstown on Sunday afternoon last. The driving rain that prevailed early on made life difficult for both teams but it was Conahy who held the early advantage as they led by 0-7 to 0-6 at half-time. A goal from a James Bergin free midway through the second half seemed to send Conahy on their way to victory. But the city side came back later with a goal of their own to keep in contention. Yet, almost immediately, James Bergin scored a second goal to finish the game as a contest. In the end, the locals advanced on a 2-17 to 1-8 score line.

TEAM: Padraic Delaney; Donal Brennan; Philly Cass; Donal Cass; Eoin Carroll; Damien Webster; Liam Cass; Gary Kavanagh; Paddy Mullan; Kieran Mooney (0-2); Edmond Delaney (0-10, 0-6 frees); Tom Phelan (0-1); Bill Murphy; Gary Dunne (0-1); James Bergin (2-3, 1-0 free). Sub – Sean Brennan.

The junior A hurlers played out a draw with Lisdowney in their opening game of the Junior A League/Championship in Jenkinstown on Friday night last. A draw was a fair result in the end as both sides enjoyed periods of dominance and there was never more than a couple of scores between the teams all through. Conahy led by 0-9 to 0-8 at half-time but when Lisdowney scored the only goal of the game mid-way through the second half, it looked as if this would aid the visitors considerably. However, Conahy fought back well but it still took a pointed free with the final action of the game to secure Conahy a share of the spoils, 1-12 to 0-15. The locals will be in action again in the J.J. Kavanagh & Sons Junior 'A' Hurling League/Championship is against Barrow Rangers on Sunday, May 14th at 7.00 p.m. in Jenkinstown.

TEAM: Andy O'Keeffe, Seamus Ó Brennan, Peter Harding, Thomas Nolan, Donal Cass, Tom Mullan, Liam Cass (0-1), Paddy Mullan (0-2), Oliver Feehan, Seán Brennan, Gary Dunne (0-2), Eoin Carroll (0-2), Bill Murphy (0-1), Paul Buggy (0-6, 0-5 frees), Darragh Dooley (0-1). Sub – Niall Coogan.

The junior B hurlers faced Danesfort in the Northern Junior B Hurling League/Championship in Jenkinstown on Saturday evening last and unfortunately lost out by 2-10 to 0-7. In what was a tough game due to the poor weather conditions, the two sides were even all through the opening half until Danesfort scored an opportunist goal to lead 1-6 to 0-6 at the interval. Unfortunately for Conahy, they were only able to add one point to their tally in the second half while Danesfort edged further ahead. In the end, Danesfort were deserving winners despite a battling performance from the locals.

TEAM: Andy O'Keeffe (0-1, free); Tomas Nolan; Thomas Nolan (Lenny); Peter Harding; Padraig Gunner; Seamus Óg Brennan; Justin Brophy; Padraic Walsh; Padraic Nolan (0-1); John Muldowney (0-1); Declan Buggy (0-3, 0-1 free); David Kennedy; Keith Dunne; Eoin Byrne (0-1); Padraig Conway. Sub – Daire Connery.

CAMOGIE

The adult camogie team continued on winning ways with an excellent victory over Ballyhale Shamrocks on Saturday night last in the Intermediate All-County League played in Presentation Convent, Loughboy. Some good scoring and stout defending throughout ensured that Conahy secured a 3-10 to 0-10 victory.

The minor camogie girls got their league campaign off to a winning start on Monday evening last against Piltown in Jenkinstown. The locals started strong with goals from Danielle Morrissey and Megan Randle which gave them a commanding lead at half time. Piltown only managed 1-2 in the first half due to great defensive work by the Conahy defence lead by Evelyn Phelan and Meave Walsh. Conahy did not ease up in the second half and with further goals by Danielle Morrissey, this ensured there was no way back for Piltown, along with some good points by Zara Gunner and Aisling Maher. This was a good performance by the Conahy girls, with a high workrate throughout. The backs were very tight and gave Piltown no space to play. The forwards lead by Danielle Morrissey, were always dangerous. At midfield, Katie Brennan and Meave Delaney kept the ball moving forward and also worked the ball out of defence well.

TEAM: Grace Mulhall; Shannon Conroy; Evelyn Phelan; Alice Byrne; Siobhan Mullan; Meabh Walsh; Emma Cahill; Katie Brennan; Meave Delaney; Hannah Murphy; Aisling Maher(0-2); Carrie Randle(1-0); Zara Gunner(0-2); Danielle Morrissey (4-6, 0-2 frees); Megan Randle (1-0). Subs: Rebecca Brennan; Megan Cuddihy; Sinead Walshe; Eve Ring; Laura Kennedy; Ruth Hennessy; Shannon Feehan; Amanda Molloy; Sorcha Horan.

The under-14 camogie girls also made it two wins from two following up their opening win over St Martin's with a good win over St Lachtain's on Wednesday evening in Freshford. These two teams have met on a number of occasions over the last number of years and there is never much between team and this was the case again. Conahy started very impressively and were the stronger team throughout most of the first half with Ellen Gunner and Emma Mulhall taking control at midfieldand getting throughforsomegreat scores.St Lachtain's came back strong in the second half but good work by the defence throughout, impressively marshelled by Caoimhe Hennessy ensured Conahy always maintained their lead.
