March 2010

Dear Applicant

Thank you for requesting details for the Teacher of A Level Economics post at St. Dominic’s. When the College opened in 1979 I was one of the first students to enrol. Returning as Principal in 2004 I was delighted to observe that the College had maintained its strength in the three areas of academic excellence, pastoral support and ethos. There is a healthy mix of long-serving staff and those entering and in the mid-term of their profession. There is an excellent spirit amongst the staff who demonstrate each day a wonderful commitment to our students.

The A Level Economics students have performed at above national averages in terms of success rates and proportion of A and B grades for the last three years. In this academic year 146 students commenced the AS programme and 92 the A2 from a base of 117 starting the AS in the previous year. The teachers of Economics are part of the Business & ICT Department which is a strong team delivering courses including A Levels in Business Studies, Economics, Applied ICT, Computing and BTEC National in Business.

All full-time members of staff are tutors and are essential for maintaining the College’s excellent pastoral support system. Members of staff also contribute to the General RE programme which is compulsory for all students. This programme is delivered to groups deliberately mixed by faith background and is fundamental to the College’s ethos.

The sixth form college sector specialises in the delivery of level 3 qualifications, particularly A Levels. This experience means that those wishing to further their careers are much in demand and, in recent years, those with curriculum responsibilities have moved on to posts in schools including Assistant Headteacher (Sixth Form), Head of Sixth Form and Head of Department.

I hope that you consider making an application to St. Dominic’s and should you be called to interview I look forward to meeting you.

Yours sincerely,

Patrick Harty

Principal
