Course Description:

This course is designed to give students an understanding of the important issues in health education. Students will study the issues of wellness, decision-making, self-concept, drugs and medicines, chemical dependency, the body’s defense mechanisms, communicable and non-communicable diseases, family life, sexuality and personal safety.

Health education is a required ½ credit for graduation in the state of Maryland. This course satisfies that requirement if successfully completed. Students are exposed to health topics including family life education and birth control during this course. The family life section of the course can be excluded for individual students if written requests from the parent are sent and received by the instructor. Parents may view any and all content of the course by setting up and appointment with the instructor.

Course Outcome:

With successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain how the five components of health provide a picture of overall health.
  2. Identify and know ways to build one’s self-esteem.
  3. Identify the importance of emotional maturity.
  4. Define and identify various sexually transmitted infections.
  5. Explain the ways in which drug use, misuse and abuse differ from each other.
  6. Create an awareness, exploration and preparation for career opportunities.
  7. Describe and identify the causes of infectious diseases.
  8. Define the characteristics of a mentally healthy person.

  3. Pen or pencil
  4. Loose leaf paper
  5. School issued laptop

Classroom Requirements/Procedures:

  1. Students are expected to complete all assignments on time and to the instructors’ specifications. Because of the smallamount of homework assigned, emphasis will be placed on in-class projects and activities. With this in mind, attendancealong with active daily participation is critical to success in this course.
  2. All homework and/or projects not received by the instructor the day it is due will receive a grade of zero, unless the student is legally absent. The student is responsible for obtainingmakeup work and handing it in. All makeup work is due no later than three days after it is received.
  3. The student is responsible for coming to class prepared everyday. The students are required to have their laptops, notebooks, paper and writing implements in class daily.
  4. Students must join the appropriate Google Classroom to accept and turn in assignments as well as view notes and other pertinent information. If alerts are “off” it is the student’s responsibility to check the classroom at least once per day. Please notify the teacher if you do not have consistent Internet at home.
  5. All policies concerning tardiness, attendance and conduct concur with school policies addressed in the school handbook.
  6. Courtesy and respect for others and their property MUST be displayed AT ALL TIMES.

Grading Policy:

Students’ progress will be evaluated in the following areas:

Summative Assessments:45%

(major projects, research papers, tests)

Formative Assessments:40%

(classwork, daily or weekly assignments, exit slips)

Final Exam:15%

(written exam assessing information presented during the semester)

In accordance with county policies, late work may not be accepted from students who have an unexcused absence. Students with excused absences have one day to make up work for each day absent, for up to three days. After the 3 days have passed there will be a minimum 10% reduction to the grade. Work may not be accepted after 5 days. Students who miss class are expected to get make up work and are responsible for making these arrangements with the instructor.
