AP CALCULUS AB COURSE DESCRIPTION

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! This is going to be a great year of learning and growth. I believe every student will learn and with hard work, will succeed.
The curriculum of AB is specified by the College Board and agrees with the curriculum of the first one and one-half semesters of calculus in most colleges. AB calculus does not include the re-teaching of pre-calculus in that the students are expected to have retained this information. Some review material will be available if needed. The student who takes this course should do so with the attitude of taking the AP test and receiving college credit.
Content: Elementary functions - properties of functions, properties of particular functions, limits, continuity, statements and applications Differential calculus - the derivative, applications of the derivative. Integral calculus: Anti-derivatives, applications of anti-derivatives, and techniques of integration.
In AP Calculus, we will approach every concept (and you must master every concept) from four different perspectives:
Analytic - This is the "x's and y's" equation manipulation that most students think of when they think "math."
Numeric - You have to be able to apply calculus concepts to numerical data (lists and tables of numbers).
Graphical - You need to be able to interpret, manipulate, and draw graphs relating to calculus concepts.
Verbal - You must be able to explain calculus concepts in clear, concise, correct English.
And, you have to be able to do all four of these things with or without a calculator.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

1. PROMPT- Arrive on time and enter the room quietly, turn in your homework and immediately go to your seat and begin your “Think Now”
2. PREPARED- Bring a positive attitude, all materials, necessary work, and proper uniform to class every day.
3. PRODUCTIVE- Maximize learning time by staying on task, following directions the first time given.
4.PATIENT- Wait respectfully and calmly for your turn to participate, do not complain or whine.
5.RESPECT- Be nice or neutral to everyone. Swearing, giving attitude, teasing, talking back, and/or bullying will not be tolerated. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. Respect yourself, your classmates, your teacher, and your classroom environment. Respect the cleanliness and tidiness of the classroom.
6. HONESTY- The ESAT honor code is strictly enforced in this course. Cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating includes: plagiarizing, having someone complete your work for you, copying any type of work; and verbally asking or sharing answers or information about a formal assessment.
7. RESPONSIBILITY- You will be held responsible for verbalizing to me if you DO NOT understand. If you need extra help, I am available to assist you through email or during tutoring.
