YEAR IN INDUSTRY PROGRAMME (YINI)

For over 35 years YINI has been placing A level students with companies for one year to gain valuable degree relevant and well paid work experience before they go to University. Many of the companies are now looking to recruit students who are as capable as students going to University, but who maybe don’t want the debt of university or are unsure about the best route for them. This can be a good option for students to get into a permanent job, and potentially lead onto a higher level apprenticeship or degree, as these companies will often encourage the young person to do a part time or distance learning degree at some point in the future, whilst still working.

All the benefits of YINI will remain:

  • Free access to industry led training throughout the year
  • The year can lead to a nationally recognised accreditation
  • Allocation of an independent mentor to support you throughout
  • Access to apply for various competitions and awards which will further enhance your CV

This is a fantastic opportunity; to find out more information and to apply please refer to:

Meet the STEM superwomen who are changing the game

By Arielle Tchiprout Posted on September 27, 2017

From a senior research scientist to a structural engineer, meet the women in STEM who are paving the way for a new generation.

MICHELLE MORTIBOYS, VEHICLE LINE DIRECTOR, SPECIAL VEHICLE OPERATIONS, JAGUAR LAND ROVER

When Michelle Mortiboys joined Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) 30 years ago, the workforce was “pretty much 90% male”. But today, “I’d say it’s 60/40 men to women. The young women now are so enthusiastic and diverse,” she says.
Mortiboys led the development of technology designed to switch a car’s engine off when not needed, and later became chief engineer. Where once STEM jobs might have looked closed to women, at JLR last year, 42 participants in its Young Women In The Know programme went on to secure apprenticeships at the company.

What advice would you give to women who are going into STEM?
“Don’t try to be male. Different points of view are what help solve problems. We want people to be themselves.”

ROMA AGRAWAL, STRUCTURAL ENGINEER AT AECOM AND ONE OF THE BRAINS BEHIND LONDON'S SHARD

From footbridges and sculptures, to train stations and skyscrapers – including the famous Shard – Roma Agrawal has certainly made her mark on London’s landscape.
She’s now making it her mission to encourage women into STEM careers, even advising policymakers and the government on the topic.
So how do you make it as an engineer? According to Agrawal, it’s “a unique mixture of scientific, artistic and communication skills”.

What advice would you give to women who are going into STEM careers?
“Networking is important in STEM careers, too – learning how to create relationships will contribute a huge amount to your career success.”

LAURA SAGER WEINSTEIN, CHIEF DATA OFFICER AT TRANSPORT FOR LONDON

Lauren Sager Weinstein has held varied posts, including senior business planner, head of Oyster development and head of analytics. She has also worked on game-changing projects such as the launch of the contactless payment system across London transport.
“The opportunity to create my own path, and to do so in a world of rapidly changing technology, has been fantastic,” Sager Weinstein says.
“I want to encourage more women to join these industries since there is such a great opportunity to work on exciting projects that have a direct impact on people’s lives.”

What advice would you give to women who are going into STEM careers?
“Be entrepreneurial in managing your own career.”

DR SELINA WRAY, ALZHEIMER'S RESEARCH UK SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW AT UCL INSTITUTE OF NEUROLOGY

Dr Selina Wray is a self-proclaimed ‘people person’. “I have to interact withpeople from the whole dementia community,” she says. “I speak to scientists, politicians, people living with dementia and people from charities – the variety keeps things interesting.”
Dr Wray first started working on dementia during her PhD at King’s College London, and she now runs her own laboratory at UCL, focused on understanding the molecular biology underlying Alzheimer’s disease and Frontotemporal dementia.

What advice would you give to women who are going into STEM?
“Identify an unanswered question that is important to the field and that you are passionate about answering. It will keep you motivated!”
