·  Review of the major elements of chapter three, again using the “move to the center” activity for students who are confident their answer to the review questions are correct.
·  Chapter Three assessment.
TUESDAY

Objectives / ·  Define federalism and explain why the Framers chose this system of government.
·  Identify powers delegated to and denied the national government, and powers reserved for and denied to the states.
·  Understand that the national government holds exclusive powers; it also holds concurrent powers with the states.
·  Explain the place of local governments in the federal system.
·  Examine how the Constitution functions as the supreme law of the land.

Plan / ·  Review the day’s objectives, and review questions 1-7 on page 95.
·  Read through and discuss Chapter FOUR Section ONE Pages 88-96 Federalism: the Division of Power and answer the page 95 section review questions in the daily writes while reading.
·  ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Students in seven groups will each be assigned one (or more) of the major heading(s) and illustrate it on poster paper for discussion, and then presentation; each student will take a role in the group, including content manager, printer, artist, and parking lot attendant. Explain the purpose of the roles before beginning.
·  HOMEWORK: Distribute copies of the Primary Source document on page 96; students will review the article and answer questions one – three for credit.

Objectives / ·  Summarize the obligations that the Constitution places on the nation for the benefits of the state.
·  Explain the process for admitting new States to the Union.
·  Examine the many and growing areas of cooperative federalism.

Plan / ·  Review the day’s objectives, and review questions 1-7 on page 103.
·  Review briefly what was studied yesterday in the division of powers and federalism.
·  Review last night’s homework.
·  Read through and discuss Chapter FOUR Section TWO Pages 97-103 The National Government and the 50 States and answer the page 103 section review questions in the daily writes while reading.
·  ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Students will take the role of a new territory that is seeking admission into the United States as a state. Based on what was learned today in class so far, students will create a graphic organizer that illustrates the process of admission to the Union that would have to take place in order for that territory to become a state. Students will then use the maypole activity in the hallway to either exchange a new idea which they don’t have down on their graphic organizer, or explain why they feel a particular element in the admission process to them is the most significant.

Plan / ·  Briefly review what was learned yesterday about the national government and the 50 states.
·  Review the day’s objectives, and review questions 1-6 on page 109.
·  Engagement activity: students will work with a partner to identify three issues which states might have in their relations with other states; all students will then stand as each pair will present one item not already identified; only when each pair has identified a unique issue will they be allowed to sit.
·  Read through and discuss Chapter FOUR Section THREE Interstate Relations Pages 105- 109
·  Answer review questions 1-6 on page 108
·  Read the “Close up” article on page 109 and prepare to discuss questions 1-3 and debate question two.
·  HOMEWORK: Review class notes for all of chapter Four prior to the Chapter FOUR test MONDAY.
