Tata – Kids of Steel® 2015 Information pack and entry form

Dear teacher,

“Tata – Kids of Steel was possibly the best event we have ever been involved in. To see the smiles on the children’s faces was so rewarding. Thank you very much for everything – a truly wonderful event,” a headteacher from Mold.

This is just one of the many positive comments we have received about our Tata – Kids of Steel triathlon series. Teachers and parents alike have praised the series for being smooth, well organised, and inspiring nearly 70,000 youngsters over the last eight years.

This document will provide you with everything you need to know to get involved in the ninth Tata – Kids of Steel seriesincluding dates and venue, a list of what to bring to the event, a booking form, and some essential information about photographers and the media. We have also included a letter for parents to make it easy for you to inform them about the event and to collate photography and media consent forms.

Tata – Kids of Steel is a series that we are very proud of. For some children it has been their first chance to ride a bike or go in a swimming pool and for others, it has reinforced their love of sport and even encouraged them to join a local sports club. Whatever their reasons for coming along, our goal is to ensure every child goes home with a big smile on their face and a wonderful experience to tell others about.

We hope that after reading this document, you will join up and registeryour school for this exciting, rewarding and free event. You can do this by simply completing and returning the booking form on page 6.

If you require any further information before making your booking, please contact Claire Kremer at the British Triathlon Trust, who will be happy to answer your questions (email: telephone: 07946042078)

The Tata Steel and British Triathlon team

About Tata – Kids of Steel

The Tata - Kids of Steel children’s triathlon series is a free, fun and inclusive way for children to experience how much fun sport can be. The series is organised by the British Triathlon Trust, on behalf of British Triathlon and Tata Steel.

The aim of Tata – Kids of Steel is to give youngsters the opportunity to try all three aspects of triathlon in a fun and safe environment. We also hope the series will inspire the youngsters to lead a more active lifestyle.

Distances may vary slightly across the series, but they are designed to suit all abilities and are based on the following:

  • Swim: 50 metres
  • Bike: 1,000 metres
  • Run: 500 metres

The events take place at venues across Great Britain and are open to schoolchildren aged 8 to 13. This series is not just aimed at sporty kids as the events are non-competitive and designed to be achievable by children of all abilities.

Since the series was launched in 2007, nearly 70,000 youngsters have taken part in these free events.

  1. Who can take part?

We provide a fun and safe environment for all children to have a positive experience of a mini triathlon wherever possible.

If any of the children in your care have a disability and require specialist help, please contact us and we will do everything we can to accommodate these needs and to give your children a full experience of the event.

If you wish to discuss a child’s specialist requirements or are unsure whether a child should take part in the events for any reason, please contact Claire Kremer who will be happy to answer your questions (email: telephone: 07946042078).

  1. What to expect on the day

We do everything we can to make sure your school’s experience of Tata – Kids of Steel is enjoyable from start to finish. The organisation of the event has been tried and tested over the last eight years to ensure everything runs safely and smoothly, so you can focus on having a great time.

The estimated time you are likely to spend at the event from start to finish is around two hours.

You will be asked to arrive at the event 30 minutes before your start time. This will give you a chance to register at our registration desk, receive a briefing from our event team on what to expect during the triathlon, and for your children to change into their swimwear.

We will provide your children with a bag in which to put their clothes and belongings. We would ask children to only bring clothing and equipment they need for the triathlon event and not to bring valuable items with them.

Once your children have changed into their swimming clothes, they will be guided onto the poolside where they will leave their bag of belongings and a full briefing will be given. Children will be asked to enter the pool in small groups, and non-swimmers will be guided to a shallow part of the pool or offered a swimming aid, depending on their requirements.

After leaving the pool your children will change into their dry clothes and be guided to the first transition area. At this point a member of the event team will collect their bags of belongings and deliver them to an area where they can be collected after the event.

A member of the event team will find suitable bikes and helmets for your children, and will ensure the helmets are safely fastened before allowing them to set off on the bike course. A small number of tandems and scooters are available for children who are not confident riding a bike.

On completion of the bike course, your children will leave their bikes and helmets in the transition area and be guided to the running course. After crossing the finishing line, your children will receive their Tata – Kids of Steel medal and a drink of water before collecting their bag of belongings.

  1. What do you need to bring?

The children just need to bring their swimming clothes, trainers, some shorts or trousers for running and cycling, and a big smile.

We provide the bikes and cycle helmets, and each child will be given a gym sack containing a swim hat and t-shirt to wear for the event and to take home. As all children are winners when they cross the finishing line, they will all receive a Tata – Kids of Steel medal to remember their day.

Where children have special needs and require their own specialist equipment to take part, we would ask you to bring this along to the event with you. We would also be grateful if you could make us aware of any special needs or specialist equipment on the booking form so we can be fully prepared to give your children the support they need on the day.

  1. Information about photography and the media

The Tata - Kids of Steel events often receive interest from local and national media. Tata Steel and the British Triathlon Federation also capture photographs and sometimes video footage of the events to use in social media and future communications to promote the series. Therefore we ask every parent / guardian to indicate whether they are happy for their child to participate in photography and media activity by completing and signing a photography and media consent form prior to the event. This can be found on page 9.

Where parents state they do not wish their child to take part in photography and media activities, the child will be given a coloured wristband to wear so that photographers and the media are aware of their wishes.

We want you to enjoy your time at our event and to be able to capture some lasting memories to take away with you. All we ask is for teachers, parents and spectators wishing to take photographs at the event to register their details with us on arrival at the registration desk.
