Ethnographic report

An ethnographic interview should make us understand how we can know another culture from ours without to make particular questions of a specific culture.

My classmates and I went to Trinity College to interview American students. I spoke with several American students about how they interact when dating.

Before going on this activity I had a neutral position or attitude because I knew only a bit of American culture. From the beginning I noticed their availability to dialogue and they wanted to make us know their habits. In fact they welcomed me very friendly; for instance, offering me something to drink. Moreover someone of them spoke more slowly, so I could understand them better.

According to my cultural dimension I put Italy nearer to “diffuse” because it usually doesn’t concern with enter into “specific”. So, for the same motivation I put Italy nearer to “cooptation” too.

By interviewing these American students, other arguments go out for instance: to have a beautiful car determine a one’s side, above all for a boy. If you have a beautiful and powerful car, make a good impression and the people consider you as a powerful person. This opinion is enough diffuse between Italian’s boys too.

Talking about “dating” between a man and a woman, an interviewee began to talk about “divorce”. I was very surprised of their answers they gave me. In fact they are against divorce, even though, according to statistical examinations, it’s up to United States the divorce’s record in the world. Surely I’m generalizing, falling in the sociometric aspect, but through these answers I could understand that even though I put myself nearer to “specific” I base a bit on the facts that they are diffused and label a culture.

In conclusion, based on questions about dating, I could understand that they think and act like us. Even though they have a different culture, their culture doesn’t condition their behaviour, their ways to interact with others. Those Americans student reason exactly like us, for instance, during a party, who stars a conversation between a boy and a girl it should be the boy. In other cases or situations too, I noticed that is always the boy to take the initiative. So American’s mentality is very similar to Italian’s.

Comment about the video “Littering”:

After viewing this video, I think it’s very significant because shows how a culture’s person can be unaware that his/her attitude or behaviour can offend another culture’s country. In fact this French girl, throwing easily a cigarette pack on the street, means that she doesn’t have respect to that country’s culture but this behaviour make us think that French girl, behave in the same way in her country too; another hypothesis is this girl has respect to her country but she doesn’t have respect to that country in which she lives at the moment. Anyway I think the respect to another culture is important but in this case I would consider the fact is wrong, “to litter” is wrong, in each country.

Subgoals:

Subgoal E: I would like to reach this subgoal because I think to interview native speakers it’s a useful occasion to learn the language I’m studying , and to start to be related to another culture’s persons in direct ways. Through the interview I can know that I’d like to know, conducting and trying to have control over all, I become the director and I establish the questions to do, so I don’t play a passive role.

In this case too, I think my interviewee’s answers will meet my expectations, there are many alternatives to television, even though the people prefer to watch TV because it’s easier than other things to do; it isn’t right that an under age audience too can watch some particular television’s programmes, even though there are controls but probably they aren’t enough. And also there are some interesting, informative television’s programmes too, but the televisions news often don’t tell the truth.

1. La maggior parte della gente nel tempo libero preferisce guardare la TV, perchè secondo te? Tu cosa fai quando non hai nulla da fare?

Perchè preferisce non pensare. Non credo alla definizione del “non aver nulla da fare”.

2. La gente tendenzialmente preferisce guardare la TV nel tempo libero ma esiste un’infinità di interessi e hobby che possono sostituire questa abitudine, quali sono per te?

Sport, libri, aiutare le persone in difficoltà, rilassarsi in una vasca da bagno con schiuma, musica e un buon bicchiere di vino.

3. Negli ultimi anni abbiamo assistito ad un numero sbalorditivo di programmi televisivi aggiunti, di ogni genere compresi i reality shows, che vengono mandati in onda senza una precedente revisione adeguata, permettendo la visione di certi programmi anche ad un pubblico minorenne. Tu cosa ne pensi?

Credo che la TV sia l’immagine dei desideri di una società e che contemporaneamente formi questa stessa mostruosa aspettativa, ognuno ha la TV che si merita.

4. Naturalmente e fortunatamente esistono anche programmi istruttivi e informativi. Secondo te la TV può avere qualche ruolo informativo?

Certo, sapendo cercare, possibilmente quando l’ora sarà tarda.

5. Il telegiornale dovrebbe essere un esempio di un programma informativo, diffondendo notizie vere, che si basano sulla realtà. Hai delle opinioni contrastanti a riguardo?

Sì, il giornale è un servo.

1. La maggior parte della gente nel tempo libero preferisce guardare la TV, perchè secondo te? Tu cosa fai quando non hai nulla da fare?

In mancanza di alternative c’è la TV. A causa della pigrizia molte persone preferiscono guardare la TV, compreso me stesso.

2. La gente tendenzialmente preferisce guardare la TV nel tempo libero ma esiste un’infinità di interessi e hobby che possono sostituire questa abitudine, quali sono per te?

Attività sportive.

Penso che c’è parecchio controllo ma qualcosa sfugge, è normale; e tutte le cause che fanno alle emittenti TV sono la dimostrazione che esiste il controllo.

4. Naturalmente e fortunatamente esistono anche programmi istruttivi e informativi. Secondo te la TV può avere qualche ruolo informativo?

No, perchè è tutto finto, quindi è impossibile.

5. Il telegiornale dovrebbe essere un esempio di un programma informativo, diffondendo notizie vere, che si basano sulla realtà. Hai delle opinioni contrastanti a riguardo?

No, magari alcuni sono di parte, quindi danno informazioni non vere.

1. La maggior parte della gente nel tempo libero preferisce guardare la TV, perchè secondo te? Tu cosa fai quando non hai nulla da fare?

Perchè manca il dialogo tra le persone e molti sono convinti che tutto ciò che trasmette è vita reale. Il mio tempo libero lo dedico alle passeggiate, alla lettura.

2. La gente tendenzialmente preferisce guardare la TV nel tempo libero ma esiste un’infinità di interessi e hobby che possono sostituire questa abitudine, quali sono per te?

Leggere, passeggiare, conversare con gli amici, con i figli, etc.

Non è giusto, ci dovrebbe essere una vera super visione, molto spesso i minori non riescono a scindere il vero dal falso, e quindi sono portati ad emulare ciò che gli viene propinato dalla televisione se non sono seguiti da una persona adulta che gli faccia capire la differenza tra finzione e realtà.

4. Naturalmente e fortunatamente esistono anche programmi istruttivi e informativi. Secondo te la TV può avere qualche ruolo informativo?

Si, se viene dato un giusto spazio ad un’informazione vera senza nessuna manipolazione.

5. Il telegiornale dovrebbe essere un esempio di un programma informativo, diffondendo notizie vere, che si basano sulla realtà. Hai delle opinioni contrastanti a riguardo?

Dovrebbe essere così.

Summary of the results of my questioning

At the end of the questionnaires I noticed that interviewees answered me as I had predicted, the television is a kind of entertainment in the most of cases and it isn’t an informative media because it never tell the truth but only a bit of truth as the journalists do. And also I noticed that who watches TV only sometimes, to the question n.7 answered me that you know a bit through television. During the ethnographic interview I was able to obtain the answers that I wanted from my interviewees without to do direct questions. I think it was very interesting to notice how the interviewees answered me spontaneously.
